Feb 07, 2018 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State avoided its second 3-game skid in Big 12 play this season, as the Wildcats responded with an 83-69 win over Texas Tech on Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum. The win on Wednesday was K-State's second home league win this season and ended a three-game home losing streak.
Kansas State (13-11, 5-8 Big 12) received 66 of its 83 points from the trio of Kayla Goth, Rachel Ranke and Peyton Williams. Goth led all scorers with a career-high 27 points on a career-high 11 made field goals. She also handed out nine assists, pulled in six rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, and pocketed three steals.
This was Goth's fourth game this season with 20 or more points and five or more assists. With her nine assists, Goth ranks 10th in school history for assists in a season with 160.
Ranke registered her first 20-point game in Big 12 play, as the freshman from Burnsville, Minnesota, tallied 20 points including a 4-of-13 effort from beyond the arc. With her four 3-pointers, Ranke is tied for second in program history with Kim Woodless (1997-98) for 3-point field goals made by a freshman with 67 this season.
Williams added a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while also pocketing two steals and a blocked shot. This was her fifth double-double this season.
Texas Tech (7-16, 1-11) also had three players in doubles figures and were led by Brittany Brewer with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Center Erin DeGrate added 14 points, while Dayo Olabode tallied 12 points.
K-State opened the first quarter by shooting 6-of-7 from the field and held a 16-10 lead with 4:38 remaining in the opening frame. Highlighting the hot start for the Wildcats was a pair of 3-pointers from Ranke.
Kansas State continued its hot opening quarter by using a 6-1 run to build a 10-point lead, 22-12, with 2:08 remaining. Goth finished a backdoor cut with a layup for K-State's final field goal of the quarter. Texas Tech narrowed the game to five, 24-19, by using a 7-2 rally to end the first quarter.
The Wildcats were able to rebuild its lead to nine, 28-19, as Williams finished a pair of free throws and Goth added another backdoor cut and layup. The Lady Raiders closed within five, 30-25, with 6:10 to play in the second quarter as Brewer scored on consecutive possessions.
Ranke's third 3-pointer of the first half and a Kaylee Page jump shot pushed the Wildcats into a 35-26 lead with 5:07 to play. Texas Tech closed to within four, 37-33, with the help of a 7-2 run. A transition layup from Kali Jones and a layup from Ranke would give K-State a 41-35 lead at the half.
The Wildcats shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the floor in the opening half. K-State dished out 12 assists in the first half, including five each from Goth and Shaelyn Martin. Martin finished the night with eight assists, eight rebounds and two steals. Martin now ranks tied for ninth in program history for career steals with 193.
Back-to-back turnovers from Texas Tech and consecutive jumpers from Goth forced Texas Tech to take an early timeout in the third quarter, as K-State built a 45-35 lead with 9:19 remaining in the quarter.
K-State did not allow Texas Tech to attempt a shot in the first four minutes of the third quarter, as the Wildcats forced six straight turnovers to begin the second half. The Wildcats constructed a 14-point lead, 49-35, as Williams registered a pair of baskets following Goth's jumpers.
The Wildcats appeared to pull away from Texas Tech, as the Wildcats secured a 57-46 lead with 1:29 to play in the third quarter after a Mary Lakes layup. The Lady Raiders responded with a quick 5-0 run to pull within six, 57-51 with 35 seconds to play. However, Lakes came up big with 19 seconds remaining as she finished a three-point play with layup and free throw to stake K-State to a 60-51 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Texas Tech forced an early K-State timeout in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Raiders creeped to within six, 63-57, with 7:32 to play. The Wildcats were able to readjust and increased the lead to eight, 69-61, after a Goth jumper with five minutes to play.
The Goth jumper would start an 11-5 run for K-State and would be capped by a final Goth jumper at 1:17 of the quarter to give K-State a 78-66 lead. K-State would go 5-of-8 from the foul line in the final minute to seal the win.

What They Said
Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
"It was nice for us to get some offense. We had not scored a whole lot of points in the last couple weeks and tonight, while we do not shoot the ball well from three, we do some things that we have not done which are get to the free throw line and get on the offensive glass better. Those gave us some extra opportunities. I think we were down maybe 10 attempts at halftime and we end up even with them so we made some big plays in the third to get even. We got them to turn the ball over a little bit in the third which was big for us. All in all, a solid step forward for us."
On Kayla Goth…
"I thought she was able to get inside, get her turnaround jumper going and was able to get to the free throw line. All of those things are good things for her. I thought she had a good aggressive mentality. She was able to get some run-outs, as well. Just a little bit of everything."
On the many back cuts tonight…
"We really did not work on it but we always have that in our arsenal. It was part of what we talked about as a coaching staff. We did feel like we had not ran it in a while and we did talk about that in our point guard meeting today, that we have this ready to go. I wanted the point guards, who really have not worked on it in practice much, mentally to be ready for us to run those things because I did think there might be some opportunities tonight."
On the locker room message at halftime…
"We needed to rebound better. We needed to fight harder down low because they were really pounding us. We needed to get a little bit better ball pressure. We did go to a little bit of a halfcourt trap in our 31-D that we have been working on. That was able to get us some live turnovers that got us some easier buckets."
On Brittany Brewer…
"I do not know that we necessarily had an answer for her all night. I thought that was the best I have seen Brittany Brewer. She was fantastic. All over the glass, a really high release on all of her shots inside and really tough to guard tonight. I do think we gave her the left hand too much. I think in the middle maybe our ball pressure was just a factor. I will go back to the third [quarter] – one of the things we wanted to do was to get their offense extended some because when they were around the arc at all they gave us a lot of problems."
On Rachel Ranke…
"She got three buckets inside the arc tonight which is probably a Big 12 high for her. She also had not gotten 20 before (in Big 12 play). You do have to move to get inside the arc so I would say she moved better tonight. One of the things we were trying to do was running more people at the glass than we normally do. I think that got her going to the rim a little bit more than just standing on the arc as a transition D person. I just think naturally she moved more. I think tonight was a night that we felt like that, because we had been struggling so much offensively, we needed to give our players some extra chances. The best way to do that was to run more people at the glass. We were really good in the second half and were able to get some second chances. So I do think Rachel was more active tonight. She had a couple good finishes on those backdoors and I thought she had the nice drive down the right seam, which was something that she is very capable of doing. Her and I sat down after practice the other day and just talked about 'one of the reasons I am on you to do more is because you are capable of more and have a pretty good feel in there'. She showed a pretty good feel tonight because [Brittany] Brewer was coming on the last couple backdoor cuts. It was not just as wide open as a couple of them were."
On Shaelyn Martin's passing…
"It is not underrated from my standpoint because that is what I wanted her to do tonight. We feel like we have two distributors on the floor with KG [Kayla Goth] and her. We were really telling Shae to be aggressive at the rim and then be a distributor if you do not have something easy down there. I thought this was one of her better aggressive games in terms of finding open players."
On Shaelyn Martin and Kaylee Page going forward…
"Kaylee had a rough night but her leadership has been incredibly instrumental to our team. We have to get her knocking some shots down, there is no doubt. I think our record when Kaylee Page knocks down three threes is pretty good. We have to continue to find her plays but she just has to shoot her way out of this. Shae needs to be Shae-like. There are going to be some games where she can have 10 or 12 points but there are also going to be some nights with her stat line like tonight. Eight assists and eight rebounds is a more important winning night for us. That is always the balance that Shae kind of has to find in a game. I will say this – her being aggressive usually leads to really good stuff for us. Those two are going to be instrumental. Our whole team really is. We are not the deepest team so really have to have all hands on deck. We were a little bit short tonight with Ashley [Ray] being ill. This was a game that Ashley, because of her strength down low, was probably going to get similar minutes to Mary [Lakes]. It is all hands on deck right now. We have to see everybody do a little more."
K-State Junior Guard Kayla Goth
On what she takes the most pride in on her stat line…
"I would say rebounding right now because I am not necessarily the most aggressive rebounder and I do not necessarily do my job most of the time. So currently at this moment, my rebounding.
On what she tries to do when the three is not falling…
"I just go find my pull-up jumper. That is what I fall back to every time. I had smaller size on me tonight so trying to get in the post a little bit more and get her backed down a little bit so I can get those easy turnarounds. Coach Mittie tells us all to find our go-to moves and I would say last season I liked going left way better than I liked going right but as we get deeper in the season I am able to go both ways more confidently."
On getting a career-high 27 points…
"I know that 27 is a career-high but I did not know that I had 27. I thought I was more around the 18-19 range but I will take the 27."
On getting in her rhythm during the game…
"I just try to stay aggressive. I think sometimes I kind of get away from that. I am trying to get my teammates more involved but it kind of shies away from me being aggressive and doing what I need to do to help my team win. I would just say I try to keep a mentality of staying aggressive and staying with my head towards the basket so that I can get those shots."
On going out there trying to do everything…
"I think I just try to do my job. There are a lot of things that I try to help my team out with. Rebounding is definitely one of the things that I do not do a very good job at, so that has definitely been a point of emphasis. With the shots and the assists, I think I just try to do what Coach Mittie asks me to do and try to produce what I can."
K-State Freshman Guard Rachel Ranke
On having all four the team's threes tonight…
"I did not know that I had all of the threes but I am a shooter. Shooters shoot so whoever is on, they are on."
On putting more emphasis on shots closer to the rim…
"They were pretty tight on me at times so I knew I had to go backdoor or at least have a chance to. Kayla [Goth] saw me on that and she had thrown great passes to me so I just knew I had to finish inside."
Texas Tech Head Coach Quotes
Texas Tech Head Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller
On Brewer's scoring outburst…
"She has been practicing a lot better. We do individual workouts twice a week, she's been really aggressive in her individual workouts, shooting the ball really well. She took 16 shots against Baylor and she only made two, but I told her that was good. That was good. I liked her aggressiveness against Baylor, she had a lot of confidence going into this game. I'm just really happy for her, that her hard work has come to fruition. I just really hope that this is how she's going to finish her sophomore year."
On any adjustments made during a run to close the first half…
"I think it was just a personnel thing, to be honest with you I really don't even remember. I just think we started playing harder, they were missing some shots, we were doing a really good job on the glass, that's what I remember."
On K-State guard Kayla Goth's 27 points…
"She's a really good player. She's got great size. I know she's playing out of position at the point, but she's smart, she's got great size, she's really poised – she's a really good player."
On K-State's ability to get back-cuts…
"They took advantage of us. It was something that we talked about at halftime and they still got us a couple times in the second half, I believe. We were hugged up, we were so concerned about the 3-point shooting – I'll take the L on that, because we did really emphasize K-State as a good perimeter shooting team. Our players did take that literally and were denying too hard and our help-side wasn't where it needed to be. It was just a really good set – you put your post up high and if you don't have any help-side, you clear out the backside, it's a great set and it's an even better set when you have players that hug you."
