Early Hole Sinks Cats vs. College of Charleston
Mar 16, 2018 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A five-run first inning was all that College of Charleston starting pitcher Evan Sisk would need, as he went the distance in an 8-0 shutout of K-State in the series opener Friday at Tointon Family Stadium.
Charleston (14-5) spotted Sisk with five runs before he threw his first pitch as the Cougars plated five runs on five hits to open the game off K-State (10-7) starter Kasey Ford. The first four Charleston batters reached base safely and Danny Wondrack brought in the game's first run with a single to score leadoff hitter Dupree Hart. A K.J. Bryant two-run double sandwiched between a pair of sacrifice flies did the damage in the opening inning for the Cougars.
Following the opening frame, Ford settled in and would allow just three hits over the next 6 2/3 innings of work. At one point, Ford retired 12 straight Charleston hitters and allowed just two to reach base from the second through seventh innings as part of a stretch of sitting down 18 of 20 batters. The 6-foot-6 right-hander's 7 2/3 inning was a career-long outing.
Sisk, a junior lefty, scattered five hits over his nine innings of work, allowing just one extra-base hit. He struck out four and walked two in the first complete game of his career.
Sophomore Will Brennan and freshman Jordan Maxson each had two-hit games, accounting for four of the Cats' five hits. Maxson doubled in the second inning and Brennan extended his on-base streak to 40 games with a single in the sixth. Catcher TK McWhertor went 1-for-3.
Charleston got three more in the eighth, courtesy of back-to-back home by Wondrack and designated hitter Cameron Garrett. Wondrack hit a two-run home run with two outs, ending Ford's day, before Garrett then hit a home run to left field on the first pitch he saw from reliever Hudson Treu.
Treu went on to pitch a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
K-State had just three at-bats with runners in scoring position (0-for-3) and were just 1-for-9 with runners on base. Charleston went 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position and turned three double plays.
K-State lost back-to-back games for the first time since starting the season 0-3 and is shut out for just the second time this season.
Three Cougars had multi-hit games – Tommy Richter, Luke Morgan and Wondrack. Wondrack finished with a game-high three runs batted in and two runs scored.
K-State and Charleston continue the three-game series at Tointon Family Stadium Saturday, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. Game 2 of the series can be seen on ESPN3 and the ESPN app. Fans can also listen live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
