Cats claim their first win over TCU in school history

FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore Ines Mesquita's three-set victory at the sixth position capped No. 31 K-State's 4-3 come-from-behind win over TCU Friday at the Bayard H. Freidman Tennis Center.

K-State earned its 12th win of the season, tying its 2016-17 season win total, as Mesquita gritted out a three-set victory, claiming 10 of the final 11 games, over Alexis Pereira, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Portuguese sophomore nabbed her 10th win of the spring season.

Earlier in the match, freshman Maria Linares and senior Carolina Costamagna each earned victories over ranked opponents playing at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions, respectively.

"I cannot say enough about the grit and resiliency this team is showing, week-in and week-out," head coach Danielle Steinberg said. "TCU played a much better doubles point, and started all singles at a very high level. We could have buckled and just say that TCU had a better day than us, but we kept fighting and believing and were able to turn it around, court by court. The love and belief these girls have in one another is inspiring and it is taking this team to special places."

The Cats have now claimed the deciding singles match in four of five matches this season.

K-State (12-4, 2-1 Big 12) beats TCU for the first time in school history, improving to 1-8 all-time. The Wildcats have won 11 of their last 14 matches and have won consecutive matches for the third time this season.

TCU (9-7, 0-1 Big 12) falls in its first action in 10 days and in its first conference match of the season. The Horned Frogs lose consecutive games for the third time this season, and will host No. 17 Kansas on Sunday.

After falling to a 2-0 deficit, the Cats won three straight singles matches with Costamagna and Linares each picking off ranked opponents. K-State's singles players went 4-2 on the day, increasing its record to 55-32 (.632) this spring.

At No. 6 singles, Anna Turco narrowed K-State's deficit to 2-1 with her straight-set victory over Stevie Kennedy, 6-3, 6-0. After opening the match winning four of the first seven games, the freshman nabbed her last eight games to clinch the singles point. Turco has won six of her first nine singles matches in her spring career.

Tying the match at 2-2, Costamagna made quick work of the nation's 84th-ranked Aleksandra Zenovka of TCU, 6-4, 7-5. The senior, playing the No. 3 position, opens her final season with a 9-6 record in singles play this spring with a 1-1 record against ranked opponents.

Linares claimed her first ranked win of the spring season when she outlasted the country's No. 114 player, Marie Norris, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, giving K-State its first lead of the day at 3-2. After breaking out to a 4-1 lead in the final set, Linares lost her next three games to knot the game at 4-4 but closed out the match by winning the final two games. The freshman reaches double-digits wins this spring, moving to 10-3.

The Horned Frogs marched back to tie the match at 3-3 as K-State's No. 4 singles player Rosanna Maffei lost to Donika Bashota of TCU, 2-6, 7-5, 2-6. The freshman loses her sixth match of the year (9-6).

TCU opened by winning the doubles point over K-State, notching wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. K-State has now lost the doubles point in just six of its 16 matches, falling to 24-18 (.571) on the season.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Costamagna and Decker were outmatched by Donika Bashota and Alexis Pereira of TCU, 1-6. The tandem remains the team leader with 10 wins in the spring season, going 1-2 in Big 12 play.

TCU secured its doubles point with a win on Court 3 as Turco and Mesquita were defeated by the Horned Frogs tandem of Aleksa Cyeticanin and Aleksandra Zenovka, 4-6. The pairing drops to 3-4 this season.

The Horned Frogs extended its lead to 2-0 as Margot Decker fell in straight sets to Aleksa Cveticanin, 3-6, 2-6. The No. 1 singles player moves to 7-7 this season in singles play.

Coming up next, K-State will take on the nation's 16th-ranked Lady Raiders of Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, at noon Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Complex. Fans can follow live statistics on the official Twitter account of the K-State Tennis team @KStateTEN.
