Seven-Run Fifth Dooms Wildcats in Series Finale with Texas

Mar 31, 2018 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Texas was able to salvage the final game of the weekend series with K-State, as it erased a three-run deficit with its seven-run fifth inning to claim a 9-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.

K-State (15-13, 2-4 Big 12), who won the first two games of the series, led 5-2 after scoring four runs in the third inning, but the Wildcats' lead evaporated after Texas (17-12. 6-3 Big 12) brought 13 hitters to the plate in the fifth. The Cats used four pitchers in the frame, who combined to yield five walks and three hits.

Wildcat starting pitcher Justin Heskett allowed two earned runs on four hits through the game's first four innings. After issuing two walks and a two-run, one-out double in the fifth, reliever Jared Marolf took over for the senior righty. Marolf faced four batters without recording an out, yielding three walks and an RBI single before leaving the bases full for Hudson Treu.

The first hitter Treu saw, Masen Hibbeler, singled to score Joe Baker and after an RBI fielder's choice by Kody Clemens, the Longhorns had put up seven in the inning and reclaimed the lead, 9-5.

Freshman Quinton Potter finished the fifth inning and went on to throw four scoreless frames, striking out three without a walk.

Heskett (2-3) suffered the loss after going 4 1/3 innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

Five K-State pitchers combined to allow seven walks against five strikeouts.

UT starter Chase Shugart was credited with the victory after he went six full innings and gave up seven hits, five earned runs with three strikeouts.

Texas plated the game's first run in the top of the first inning, as Tate Shaw led off the game with a single to center and alter scored on Ryan Reynolds' single to left. The Longhorns got two hits and a walk in the inning off Heskett.

Drew Mount hit a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the second inning off Shugart. The homer was Mount's team-leading eighth of the season.

K-State batted around in the third inning as it put up a four-spot to take a 5-2 lead. Dylan Watts brought home TK McWhertor, who singled to lead off the inning, with an RBI groundout. Cameron Thompson delivered a two-run single to give the Cats their first lead. The sophomore shortstop would then steal two bases and score on Trent McMaster's single up the middle to cap the four-run frame.

Thompson, who had five hits in Friday's game, went 1-for-4 with a team-high two runs batted in.

Kyle Barfield and McWhertor each had two-hit games as seven different players registered a base hit in the game for the Cats.

Texas' Andy McGuire drove in a game-high three runs before moving to the mound in the eighth inning to earn his second save of the season.

K-State will travel to Omaha for a Wednesday night matchup with Creighton at 6:30 p.m. at TD Ameritrade Park. The game between the Cats and Bluejays will be broadcast on NET Nebraska and stream free online at NETNebraska.org.
