Cats defeat No. 48 William & Mary, 4-3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Carolina Costamagna and freshman Maria Linares put together back-to-back wins to seal the No. 28 K-State women's tennis team's 4-3 victory over the nation's 48th-ranked William & Mary at the Millie West Tennis Facility in Williamsburg, Virginia, Sunday.

"Today was another gritty match from the team," head coach Danielle Steinberg said after the match. "I am more and more impressed with the unity and heart this team shows. We did not play our best at some positions, but we gave our all in every spot. Seeing the whole team support Maria [Linares] at the end to clinch the match is worth everything to me. Fighting the way we did today will turn this from a good team to a great team."

After K-State (8-2) jumped up out to a 2-0 lead, it dropped three straight singles matches before Costamagna and Linares each won their singles matches in a third set to claim consecutive ranked team wins for the Cats.

Costamagna tied the match at 3-3 with her win over the Tribe's Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The senior won five of her last games to complete the win, improving to 4-3 this season is three-set matches.

Linares adds to her resume after being named this week's Big 12 Player of the Week, defeating William & Mary's Natalia Perry, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. The freshman has now clinched consecutive matches for K-State, adding a 9-1 record this spring.

K-State opened the match with a 1-0 lead, clinching the doubles point with wins at Courts 1 and 3. The Cats have now completed such a feat in seven of 10 matches this season. The Cats move to 38-19 this season in doubles play.

Freshman Margot Decker and Costamagna opened the day with a 6-1 win over Clara Tanielian and Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-1. The No. 1 tandem for the Cats improves to 10-3 this season.

Sophomore Ines Mesquita and freshman Anna Turco's victory over Charlotte Madson and Olivia Thaler of William & Mary, 7-5, clinched the doubles point. The duo picks up its first win of the season when paired.

After the Cats clinched the doubles point, the pairing of Linares and freshman Rosanna Maffei fell to the tandem of Lauren Goodman and Natalia Perry, 6-7 (4), dropping their record to 2-1 this season.

Opening singles play, Mesquita extended the Cats lead to 2-0 with her straight-set victory over the Tribe's Olivia Thaler, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore is now 17-5 in her sophomore campaign, adding a 7-2 record in spring season play.

The Tribe (8-6) took a 3-2 lead over K-State, winning three consecutive singles matches before the Cats clinched its 4-3 win over the Tribe.

Turco dropped her match against Lauren Goodman of the Tribe, 5-7, 2-6, narrowing the match to 2-1. The freshman of Italy lost eight of her last 10 games, and moves to 9-4 this season, managing a 2-1 record in the spring season.

The match was tied at 2-2 after Maffei fell to Clara Tanielian, 3-6, 4-6. The freshman loses her two-match winning streak, and is now 11-6 this season.
