Cats win fourth consecutive match
DALLAS – The K-State women's tennis team continued its best start since 2010-11 as it won its eighth match in nine attempts with a 5-2 victory over SMU at the SMU Tennis Complex on Friday.
"Conditions were very tough today with the high winds, but we were able to focus on the things we could control and I am proud of the team for that," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "Today was our first real windy match day, and I am really happy of the way we responded."
K-State (9-2) notched the win over the Mustangs by winning four of six singles matches, improving to 39-21 (.650) this season. The Cats improve to 3-1 all-time against SMU.
The Mustangs (6-7) drop two consecutive matches for the third time this season.
From No. 4 singles, freshman Rosanna Maffei, gave the Cats a 2-0 lead, defeating SMU's Ana Perez-Lopez, 6-3, 6-3. Maffei won five of the final six games to clinch the match. The product of Italy improves to 12-6 in her singles career, going 9-5 in straight-set contests.
Freshman Anna Turco widened the lead to 3-0 for the Cats, topping SMU's Sarai Monarrez Yesaki, 6-3, 7-6 (2). The freshman moves into a double-digit win total (10-4), and adds her third win of the spring season.
The Mustangs added a point, bringing the match to a 3-1 score, when Ines Mesquita was outlasted by Tifanny Holleck, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6. The sophomore of Portugal falls to 17-6 this season and dropped her first match at the No. 6 position.
K-State clinched its win as senior Carolina Costamagna defeated Karina Traxler, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot, pushing the lead to 4-1 for the Cats. The senior won 12 of her last 15 games to clinch the match. Costamagna picks up her 13th win in her final season as a Wildcat.
Margot Decker gave the Cats a 5-1 lead with her three-set win over Anzhelika Shapovalova of SMU, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2. In the third set, Decker won six of the last seven games to clinch her win. The freshman is 12-8 this season, and moves back to a .500 record at the No. 1 position this season (5-5).
Maria Linares had her five-match winning streak snapped when she lost to Lisa Buss, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. The freshman drops to 15-5 this season and loses just her second match of the spring season (9-2).
K-State took a 1-0 lead over the Mustangs when it nabbed the doubles point for the eighth time in 11 matches this spring season, winning two of its three doubles matches. The Cats doubles tandems are 19-11 in the spring.
Playing at No. 3, Turco and Mesquita won five of the final six games in defeating the Mustangs' Ana Perez-Lopez and Nicole Petchey, 6-2. The tandem is 2-1 this season.
