K-State to Challenge SMU, Georgia State in Dallas

Cats hold nation’s No. 31 ranking

MANHATTAN, Kan. – After picking up consecutive ranked wins at Missouri and William & Mary, the K-State women's tennis team will head to Dallas to face off with SMU on Friday at 4 p.m., and Georgia State on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., at the SMU Tennis Complex.
 
K-State (8-2) is coming off defeating William & Mary, 4-3. The Cats are in a stretch of winning three straight and seven of its last eight matches.
 
SMU (6-6) looks to bounce back from a 6-1 loss at Loyola Marymount on February 28. K-State holds a 2-1 mark all-time against SMU. The Mustangs won the last matchup, defeating K-State 5-2 in 2017 in Dallas.
 
Georgia State (6-7) lost to Winthrop in its most recent competition. Saturday's matchup marks the first time the Cats will face the Panthers.
 
K-State has executed a 35-19 (.648) record in singles in the dual season, being led by freshman Maria Linares (9-1), sophomore Ines Mesquita (7-2) and freshman Rosanna Maffei (6-4).
 
At the No. 2 position, Linares comes to play as a winner of five straight matches and was named Big 12 Player of the Week on February 26. The product of Venezuela clinched the Cats' last win as she defeated William & Mary's Natalia Perry, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Linares is 15-4 overall in her career.
 
The Portuguese sophomore Mesquita is 17-5 overall this season and most recently from the No. 6 position. She contributed to the Cats win over William & Mary, grabbing a straight-set victory over Olivia Thaler, 6-3, 6-3.
 
Senior Carolina Costamagna comes into play with a 12-10 overall record (5-4 in spring) after winning five of her last six games to complete her victory over William & Mary's Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The senior is 4-3 this season in three-set matches, playing mostly from the No. 4 position.
 
At No. 1 singles, Margot Decker comes in at 11-8 to begin her career as a Wildcat, including a 4-5 clip in the spring season. Decker has notched four ranked wins, with two of those wins coming in the spring. Most recently, the freshman fell to the nation's 86th-ranked player, Rosie Cheng (4-6, 6-1, 2-6) of William & Mary.
 
Maffei, a native of Antripalda, Italy, saw her two-match winning streak snapped when she was defeated by William & Mary's Clara Tanielian, 3-6, 4-6. After opening her career at 8-4 in straight-set contests, Maffei is now 11-6 overall this season.
 
Playing from a mixture of the Nos. 4 and 6 positions, Anna Turco comes into this weekend's play with a 9-4 record overall and 2-1 in the spring. The freshman from Italy dropped her last match against Lauren Goodman of the Tribe, 5-7, 2-6.
 
K-State has claimed the doubles point in seven of its 10 matches this season and are 17-10 in doubles matches in the spring.
 
From No. 1 doubles, Decker and Costamagna have posted K-State's best doubles record with a 7-2 record. The tandem opened the Cats' match with William & Mary with a 6-1 win over Clara Tanielian and Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-1. The No. 1 tandem for the Cats is to 10-3 when playing together including the fall season.
 
Maffei and Linares carry a 2-1 record this season as a pairing from the No. 2 position. Most recently, the pairing fell to the Tribe's tandem of Lauren Goodman and Natalia Perry, 6-7 (4).
 
Mesquita and Turco nabbed their first victory as a pairing over Charlotte Madson and Olivia Thaler of William & Mary, 7-5, moving to 1-1 overall.
