Wildcats Earn Pair of Hard-Fought Victories at Big 12 Double Dual

Apr 07, 2018 | Rowing

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team earned a pair of victories in the Big 12 Double Dual against Tennessee and Alabama, in what proved to be a hard-fought team effort on Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kansas on Saturday.

"They are racing really hard and really going for it, today they showed that they are not backing off," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. "But you can see the difference in water time, the difference between the other crews and ours is how much time has been spent on the water."

Racing for the first time since the San Diego Crew Classic on March 24-25, the Wildcats put together several notable performances, despite their lack of time on the water this spring. In the morning session against Tennessee, the K-State 3v8+ boat consisting of coxswain Aimee Farrell and rowers Abbey Hebbert, Caroline Geither, Natasha Johnson, Laura Clement, Aubrey Gilchrist, Taylor Hartman, Emma Witter and Nikole Cain fought for the first victory of the day for the Wildcats, finishing in 6:57.998 to beat the Tennessee 3v8+ boat, which finished in 7:09.515.

In the afternoon session, the Wildcats returned to the water to take on Alabama, who was coming off a sweep against Kansas in their morning session. In the women's 2v8+ race, the K-State boat was able to inch out a victory over Alabama, winning the race in 6:44.070, while Alabama finished in 6:45.665.

"They really did a good job, the second varsity eight boat is the boat that really impressed me today," Sweeney said. "This afternoon they were much better, they were sharp and raced really well."

Along with their two victories, the Wildcats had a number of strong performances throughout the day. In the women's 1v4+ race against Alabama, the Wildcats competed throughout the race to finish just behind the Crimson Tide in 7:26.729.

Following the Big 12 Double Dual, the Wildcats will have a week and a half of practice time, before traveling to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta on April 21-22. The Wildcats hope to get some much-needed water time to help them prepare for the upcoming competitions.

"I think our team is battling very well given the circumstances. If we can get on the water and work on some things I know this team has great potential moving forward," Sweeney added.
