Jun 01, 2018 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Sophomore Nina Schultz was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest region women's field athlete of the year, the organization announced on Friday, marking the second-straight season Schultz has earned the honor.

Schultz's 2018 honor is the fourth consecutive year a Wildcat has earned USTFCCCA Midwest region women's field athlete of the year honors, coming after Schultz won the award in 2017 and Akela Jones won the award in 2015 and 2016.

Schultz's sophomore campaign has been highlighted by her success in the women's heptathlon, where she currently ranks third in the country heading into the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 6-9. Schultz scored 6,018 points to win the event at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas earlier this season.

Following her standout performance at the Roadrunner Invitational, Schultz put together a spectacular performance at the Commonwealth Games in April, where she went on to score a personal best 6,133 points behind a series of personal bests, which led to her silver medal finish. Her performance at the Commonwealth Games led to USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week honors, as her score ranked second globally at the time.

In addition to her success in the heptathlon this season, Schultz contributed to K-State's second-straight Big 12 Championship at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco, Texas on May 11-13. Schultz scored in the women's high jump, long jump and 4x400 meter relay, helping the Wildcats to a program-best 135 points.

With her third-ranked heptathlon score, Schultz will set her sights on the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, with the women's heptathlon taking place on June 8-9.
