MANHATTAN, Kan. – Ben Kern, a K-State men's golfer from 2003-06, qualified for the 2018 PGA Championship by tying for ninth place in the PGA Professional Championship that concluded on Wednesday at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in Seaside, California.
Kern, who will be making his first-career PGA Tour appearance, will play in the 100th PGA Championship, August 9-12, at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri. A native of Tucson, Arizona, Kern is currently the head golf professional at Diamondback Golf Club in Abilene, Texas.
Buoyed by a 4-under par 68 in the third round, Kern carded a 1-over par 289 in the 72-hole event. He started the tournament with a pair of 2-over par 74s in the first two rounds and carded a 1-over par 73 in Wednesday's final round, advancing to the PGA Championship as one of the top 20 finishers.
Kern won the Northern Texas PGA (NTPGA) Championship last August with a two-round score of 137 to qualify for this year's PGA Professional Championship, an event that capped an impressive 2017 season as he won NTPGA Ben Hogan Stroke Play Average Award. He also finished in the top three of nine other NTPGA events last season, including wins at the NTPGA Winter Series #4 and EPEC Pro-Pro Championship.
