Cats Suffer Season’s First Loss vs. Marquette Friday

Aug 31, 2018 | Volleyball

ST. LOUIS – K-State's Kylee Zumach and Gloria Mutiri each turned in double-digit kill performances, but the Marquette Golden Eagles handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season in straight sets (22-25, 19-25, 22-25) Friday at Chaifetz Arena on the opening day of the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic.

Zumach, who led K-State (2-1) in kills for the third straight match to start the campaign, picked up 14 kills on 35 attacks while Mutiri hit .400 on her way to a season-best 13 kills. Marquette (3-1), who is receiving votes in the latest AVCA top-25 poll, hit over .300 as a team and were led by Allie Barber's match-high 15 kills.

"They were better than we were in serve and pass, primarily," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "We were siding out at 69 percent, which is rolling, but they were siding out at 75 percent. Had we just been able to get some stops and upgrade our serving, it would have been a much better much."

Setter Sarah Dixon posted season highs with 40 assists and nine digs while junior middle blocker Elle Sandbothe picked up seven kills on 10 swings with just one error (.600) to go with four blocks.

Along with Sandbothe, middle blocker Macy Flowers and Mutiri each at least three blocks, helping the Cats out-block MU, 9.0-4.0, with seven blocks coming in Set 3.

K-State hit over .300 in just once (Set 2) while Marquette reached the .350 plateau in each of the first two frames.

Marquette had 16 kills and hit .382 as a team in its 25-22 win in the opening set. K-State was able to level the score twice but never held a lead in Set 1 but never trailed by more than four points. The Cats were led by the freshman Mutiri who tallied five kills on eight swings with just one error (.500) and Zumach who recorded four kills without an error on nine attacks (.444). MU had just three attacking errors while forcing the Wildcats into six errors.

In the second set, the Cats tied the score nine time and were even at 15-15 but a five-point run by the Golden Eagles propelled them to a 25-19 set victory. Zumach picked up seven kills while Mutiri added five on 10 swings without an error in the frame. MU hit .350 as a team while K-State produced a .316 attacking efficiency.

After falling behind by as many as eight points in the final set, K-State was able to cut Marquette's lead to just one at 22-21 in part to a 7-2 run. MU scored 10 of the game's first 12 points while the Cats committed five attacking errors before recording their first kill. K-State would go on to have just two more attacking errors and Sandbothe had four kills on four swings without an error. Sandbothe, Flowers and Mutiri each picked up multiple blocks in the set as the Wildcats tallied five as a team.

K-State continues the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic with a Saturday doubleheader with Saint Louis (12 p.m. CT) and Western Kentucky (5 p.m. CT).
