Sep 01, 2018 | Volleyball
ST. LOUIS – K-State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a pair of four-set victories Saturday over Saint Louis and Western Kentucky, as the Wildcats concluded the second weekend of the regular season at the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic at Chaifetz Arena.
"Going into today, were really trying to upgrade our point scoring," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "We were much better defensively today. I was really proud of them for that, they were focused on being a better defensive team. We upgraded with our serving and were doing better things at the net. That to me is the high point."
K-State (4-1) had a pair of all-tournament selections in junior middle blocker Elle Sandbothe and redshirt senior outside hitter Kylee Zumach.
Zumach led the Wildcats with 35 kills (3.50 kills/set) while hitting .286 and turned in a career-high 14 digs against Saint Louis (0-4) on her way to her second double-double of the year.
Sandbothe hit .375 or better in all three matches and matched her career-best output of 11 kills against Western Kentucky (4-3). The junior picked up at least four blocks in each match, totaling 13 total blocks and averaging 1.18 blocks per set. It was the first all-tournament nod of her career.
"Kylee is doing so much for us right now," Fritz said. "A lot of what she does hangs on her attacking, but there are so many other things she's doing right now. She's becoming a better defender and becoming a better server.
"I really felt like Elle was able to generate some offense behind the setter," added Fritz. "That's a nice thing for us to have – a hitter that can score points behind the setter in the front row."
