
Wildcats Looking for a Strong Debut in Michigan

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team opens the 2018-19 season this Saturday at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan. The invitational will be hosted at the par-72, 6,334-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course.
The two-day tournament will feature 36 holes on Saturday, with the final 18 being played on Sunday. The tournament consists of an 8:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start on Saturday and a 9 a.m., shotgun start for Sunday's final round.
Kansas State's lineup for the event will feature senior Chloe Weir, sophomores Reid Isaac, Niamh McSherryand Darby Deans, and freshman Briony Bayles, who will be making her collegiate debut.
Despite the graduation of Connie Jaffrey,who holds the school record for lowest career stroke average, K-State returns its talented sophomore class, which finished fifth nationally last year according to the Golfstat Freshman Impact Rankings. The Cats will also lean on the senior leadership of Weir. The Belfast, Northern Ireland, native finished with a stroke average of 73.89 last year.
"We are happy the season is beginning this weekend," head coach Kristi Knight said. "It will be exciting to hit the road and compete. Forest Akers West Golf Course will be a good test. The ladies have put in the work, and now it is about going out there and playing. This will be the fun part!"
The Wildcats will be competing in a very tough field, which includes four teams in the Golfweek preseason top 30 and seven teams returning off NCAA tournament appearances.
The field includes tournament host and 18th-ranked Michigan State, as well as Eastern Michigan, No. 12 Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Mercer, No. 26 Miami, Mississippi State, Northern Illinois, Old Dominion, Rutgers, Sacramento State, Texas Tech, Toledo and No. 23 Virginia.
