Sep 26, 2018 | Volleyball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – K-State turned in season lows in kills and hitting percentage in a straight-set loss to West Virginia (21-25, 15-25, 17-25) at the WVU Coliseum Wednesday night.
West Virginia (8-7, 1-2 Big 12) used 11 team blocks to limit K-State (10-4, 0-3 Big 12) to just 30 kills and a .152 efficiency. No Wildcat was able to reach double-figure kills as their season-long losing streak hit three matches.
"I thought (West Virginia) served exceptionally well," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "We had a hard time staying in system to be able to generate first-swing offense. I thought they outplayed us in a lot of areas."
WVU picked up nine service aces while K-State registered just two against eight service errors. Kristina Jordan and Lacey Zerwas each tallied three aces on the night for West Virginia.
Redshirt senior Kylee Zumach led the Cats with seven kills, five of which came in the third set, and 10 digs. Freshman opposite Gloria Mutiri and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Peyton Williams each turned in six kills, four coming in the opening game.
The Mountaineers were paced by Natania Levak, who turned in 11 kills on 17 errorless swings (.647). Katelyn Evans added 10 kills as WVU hit .290 and recorded 40 kills.
Midway through the first set, a five-point spurt gave the Mountaineers a 13-10 lead. K-State fought back and later leveled the score at 18, only to see WVU counter with three straight points out of a timeout. West Virginia closed the opening set with back-to-back points, 25-22. Mutiri and Williams each added four kills, accounting for eight of the Cats' 11 kills in the set.
West Virginia opened a 10-3 lead in Set 2 before the Wildcats put together four consecutive points to cut the WVU lead to just three. A 9-1 burst later in the frame opened a 20-9 cushion for the Mountaineers, who went on to a 25-15 set win. K-State managed just seven kills against six attacking errors in the second game for a .037 hitting percentage while WVU hit .387.
Three separate four-point runs in the final set lifted WVU to a 25-17 set win and a straight-set victory. K-State tied the score once but was never able to take a lead in the third game. The final game was the only set in which the Cats hit above .200 (.219).
Setter Sarah Dixon added 26 assists and two kills while libero Devan Fairfield had eight digs. Williams led the team with a pair of blocks.
K-State returns home to Ahearn Field House as it welcomes in TCU (9-4, 1-1 Big 12) for a 7:30 p.m., first serve Saturday. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Fans can listen to Rob Voelker on the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live, free audio streaming on K-StateSports.com/watch.
