Horned Frogs Prevail in Four Sets over K-State Saturday
Sep 29, 2018 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State rebounded from an opening-set loss and tied the match at a set apiece and later fought off three match points, but ultimately fell to TCU Saturday night at Ahearn Field House, 22-25, 25-18, 12-25, 22-25.
TCU (10-4, 2-1 Big 12) was led by freshman élan McCall and her 21 kills while middle blocker Anna Walsh added 16 in helping the Horned Frogs to a 58-47 advantage in total kills over K-State (10-5, 0-4 Big 12). The Wildcats extend their season-long losing streak to four matches.
Senior middle blocker Macy Flowers posted a match-high eight blocks, including three solo blocks, to match her season high. Fellow middle blocker Peyton Williams hit .429 while recording a season-best 11 kills and freshman Gloria Mutiri led the Wildcats with a dozen kills (.290).
"I thought our middles played extremely well, I was pleased with their effort," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "I felt Gloria has proven to be a consistent presence for us, as well. In the end, I think we've got to stabilize our serve receive. We've got to be a better point-scoring team and we've got to figure out how to get opponents down.
"There were times I thought we played exceptionally well. It's just the lack of consistency. We are still searching for it against good teams."
Setter Sarah Dixon turned in her fifth double-double, recording 13 digs to go with 42 assists. Libero Devan Fairfield registered a team-high 17 digs on the night.
Following the Frog's 25-22 win in Set 1, K-State responded with a wire-to-wire second-set victory, 25-18. The Cats' defense suppressed TCU to a .044 hitting percentage in Set 2 while Mutiri had four kills and Williams added three on four swings.
TCU responded by hitting .464 in the third set and limited K-State to just 12 points to take a 2-1 match lead.
K-State held an early five-point lead in Set 4, 11-6, before a 10-2 run captured the lead for the Frogs. Facing match point, the Cats scored three consecutive points before TCU completed its four-set win.
Redshirt senior Kylee Zumach ended the match with eight kills and 12 digs. Outside hitter Alyssa Schultejans also posted eight kills while Flowers finished with seven.
K-State hits the road for another conference road test, as it travels to Texas Tech (14-3, 3-0 Big 12) Wednesday night at United Supermarkets Arena. The match with the Red Raiders starts at 6 p.m., and will air on FOX Sports Southwest Plus and the FOX Sports Go app. Fans can listen to Rob Voelker on the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live, free audio streaming on K-StateSports.com/watch.
