K-State Upsets (11/11) Texas with Wire-to-Wire Win
Jan 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Facing its Big 12-high sixth Associated Press top-25 opponent this season, Kansas State never trailed on Wednesday night as the Wildcats picked up their first win against a ranked opponent in the 2018-19 season with an 87-69 victory over (11/11) Texas on Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
K-State (11-6, 2-3 Big 12) has defeated an AP top-25 opponent in 13 straight seasons. With the win, the Wildcats ended a nine-game losing streak against ranked opponents dating back to the 2017-18 season. This was the highest ranked opponent K-State has defeated since downing 10th-ranked Texas Tech in Lubbock on January 14, 2012.
The Wildcats had four players in double figures and were led by senior guard and 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award candidate Kayla Goth with her third double-double of the season. Goth finished with 20 points and 12 assists. The 12 assists tied her career-high and marks the most assists by a Big 12 player this season.
Adding to the K-State attack was freshman guard Christianna Carr. The product of Manhattan, Kansas, finished with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting including a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc.
Junior forward and 2019 Katrina McClain Award candidate Peyton Williams added 18 points and eight rebounds. Williams paced K-State in the first quarter, as Kansas State came out red hot from the field in the first quarter, shooting 61.5 percent in the frame on the way to a 23-13 lead. The 23 points were the most by K-State in a first quarter this season.
Williams led all scorers in the opening quarter with 11 points including a career-high three 3-pointers. Her 11 first quarter points tied her own school record for points in an opening quarter.
Goth handed out seven assists on eight of K-State's made field goals in the first quarter, setting a new school record for assists in a first quarter.
K-State dashed out on a 6-0 run to begin the second quarter and build a 29-13 lead and force Texas into a timeout with 8:09 to play in the first half. The Wildcat defense was strong to open the quarter, as the Longhorns were held without a made field goal for the first six minutes of the quarter.
The Wildcats continued to put pressure on the Longhorns and would outscore Texas, 19-10, in the second quarter on the way to a 42-23 lead at the half. Williams finished the quarter with a pair of free throws, then beat the buzzer on a putback.
Of the eight Wildcats to see the floor in the first half, seven registered at least two points as K-State shot 50.0 percent (15-of-30) from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Texas (14-3, 4-1) raced out of the locker room with a 7-0 run to begin the third quarter and force a K-State timeout with 8:10 to play in the frame.
The Wildcats answered back with a 9-2 run, as Goth had a hand in four straight field goals for K-State to rebuild the lead to 51-32 with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the stanza, as K-State entered the final quarter leading, 60-43.
In the final quarter, K-State held off the rally by Texas, outscoring the Longhorns 27-26 in the final frame. The Wildcats shot 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the field in the fourth quarter, including a 3-of-3 effort from beyond the arc. The 27 points K-State scored in the final quarter were the most by the Wildcats in the fourth quarter this season.
K-State ended the night shooting 53.6 percent (30-of-56) from the field including a 57.9 percent (11-of-19) performance from beyond the arc. The 11 made three-pointers are tied for the most by K-State this season.
Texas improved to 43.9 percent from the floor (25-of-57) and were 8-of-20 (.400) from 3-point range. K-State held the advantage in points off turnovers, 20-11, as Texas surrendered 14 turnovers to K-State's 10.
The 87 points by K-State were the most scored by the Wildcats against Texas in the history of the series. With the win, Kansas State ended a seven-game losing streak to the Longhorns.
Kansas State will take to the road this weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Saturday's game will be available on FOX Sports Southwest and on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.
What They Said
JEFF MITTIE, KANSAS STATE HEAD COACH
Opening statement…
"We played outstanding tonight. Did a lot of very good things. I think the best thing that we did was we competed harder. We competed on the glass, we competed offensively. I thought our cuts were much harder. We just competed. The one thing I kept telling them was when you do that you give yourself an opportunity. If you don't do it, you really aren't going to have an opportunity to win big games. When you compete and fight like that, you give yourself an opportunity. I think that's what we did tonight."
On finding open shots…
"We had decent looks against Kansas. They [Kansas] have been excellent, but we didn't mind our looks against them. I do think what they did was physical. We handled the physical play better than we handled it on Sunday. We handled that better, so when we got our opportunities from the three-point line, I think our feet were set and I think we handled that physical play better. She [Peyton Williams] still didn't shoot it enough for my taste. I thought there were two or three that she needs to pull, but, it's a good start."
On Jasauen Beard making plays in the fourth quarter…
"We know two things with Jasauen Beard…something is going to happen. It can be good or it can be interesting. I tell you what, I thought she made plays though. She made a great driving layup and then she made kind of a bad play, but she hustled back and got a deflection, then she got on the floor. She just had a lot of energy to her plays. It wasn't perfect. She gave up a three where she was a little confused on where she was at with the defense but I thought her effort was huge. I just think that when she is active like that, we are a better basketball team, no doubt about it. We need a player like that. We need a player like her who is athletic enough to go do it in any game and is athletic enough to the ball. She has all of those things."
On mitigating Texas' offense…
"What we were trying to do was trying to mix our defenses enough to keep them off balance as much as we could. When they are in attack mode, you can see how fast they are. Sug [Sutton] gets it in transition, you can see how fast Danni Williams gets her feet set, you can see how talented Joyner Holmes is on the break and on the lobs you just can't get to. So what we wanted to do was cause a little bit of doubt in their mind. What are they in, what coverage are they in, where are they coming from? I thought our group was probably the best they have been. Probably the best we have been at handling those switches. Offensively, what I think we did was not turning the ball over. We are able to keep the ball a little bit. We are able to keep the possessions at a lower possession and we need that against a rebounding team like this. We can't afford to have 75 shots in this game. So not turning the ball over allows us to keep the ball and get the kind of shots that we needed to get."
On responding from the loss to Kansas on Sunday…
"We only have two seniors on this team. So, some of this is the inconsistencies that you get. But we're trying to find a higher level of consistency. Tonight was a real step forward. This was a nice bounce back game. We need to be able to carry these things forward. We need to be able to play with that kind of energetic game coming forward on Saturday. I will say this, that was a tough loss on Sunday. I think it always is. You have to bounce back and they have been solid in practice. I wouldn't come in here and tell you that they have been great. I think they have been solid in practice. We have had some discussions about what I think that we need to do, particularly these two [Peyton Williams and Kayla Goth], as leaders, and where we could play better. I thought that both of them were excellent tonight in the areas that we discussed."
On the need to be opportunistic against Texas…
"I thought our zone was very active. We get more turnovers out of the zone when we are active. So you do have to take advantage of it. I thought we made the extra passing during that first half stretch. Somebody mentioned the kick-out from Peyton [Williams] to Chrissy [Carr]. There were extra passes being made tonight that were really, really good. So, against Texas, you're probably not going to get a game full of those opportunities. We were able to take advantage early."
On Kayla Goth's night…
"I thought toughness. She always looks like she is tired out there, so I don't even pay attention to it anymore. She always looks like she is one step away from passing out. Really, I thought it was a tough performance. I thought it was physical on her. Some nights maybe she gets more hand-check calls and it gets a little easier, but I thought they [referees] allowed them to be physical with her. I thought she had to play through physical play down there. I thought she kept poise. She said poise a lot tonight. Poise pleases me when our guards are tired, but she is saying that we have to play with poise, because that is something that I am constantly preaching to them."
KAYLA GOTH, SENIOR GUARD
On controlling the end of the game…
"Yes and no. I looked at Coach Mittie a couple times, dang near ready to pass out. Some of that was me trying to catch my breath. They were pressuring me all night, so I knew that if I could get that first step on them, I could pretty much get where I wanted to. I don't know if it was the most comfortable. They made me pretty uncomfortable all night. I don't know if it was the most comfortable, but I felt pretty good about it."
On where this game ranks among the greats in her career…
"It might be one of the biggest of my career, honestly. I mean, the 11th-ranked team in the country, it's probably the biggest win of my career.
"I think the focus-level too. We had some offensive execution but we had a lot less (errors) than what we normally do. Everyone was focused, everyone was locked in. We can be a pretty good basketball team when we can make that happen. It was just making that happen."
On responding to Texas' charge in the second half and keeping the lead…
"That 7-0 run was a lot of things that we made mistakes on. They obviously made shots, credit to them 100 percent, but a lot of that was stupid things we were doing. Coach Mittie called a timeout right after that 7-0 run, talked to us in a very nice tone and then we kind of talked about it further in the huddle. Just keeping everyone focused. That's what we talked about at halftime - they're the 11th-ranked team in the country for a reason, they're going to come out, they're going to hit you, they're going to go on those runs, but we've got to minimize those runs, we've got to cut those runs in half."
On noticing Texas getting more and more deflated as the game wore on…
"Yes and no. I think a little bit, but it wasn't something that I noticed. What I noticed, looking back on it, is that's what we looked like on Sunday and it's tough when you have that kind of energy - either dang I'm tired or things aren't going right or whatever - it's tough to have that attitude and win games. I wouldn't say I noticed it because they were still up in me the good majority of the game, they didn't really look tired to me."
On the immediate feeling when the buzzer sounded…
"Honestly, this probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but relief. We obviously go up big on them in the first half and they're the 11th team in the country. I'm sure they could come back from 20 down, whatever night. I was preaching in the locker room shot selection and controlling the pace, controlling the tempo, because it's really easy to lose that 20-point lead against the 11th-ranked team in the country. The whole second half you're on edge. You're that far ahead, you're that close, you've got to finish it out - it was more relief than anything."
PEYTON WILLIAMS, JUNIOR FORWARD
On where this game ranks among the greats in her career…
"It was the most fun, one of the most fun games that I've played in too because everyone was contributing, everyone was doing their job, everyone was hitting shots and it was just a fun atmosphere.
"The weather took some of the crowd away, so we had to make our own energy. We had some people step up and do that as well."
On how key the energy and hustle plays were in the game…
"It's great when shots are falling, but whenever you feel like Texas is trying to make a run back at you, those hustle plays are integral to keeping us in the game and keeping us ahead. (Jasauen Beard) whenever the ball was going out of bounds, I was like man, she should probably let that ball go out of bounds, she goes and gets it to Chrissy - that obviously was a risk, but it was a good risk. All of us were super excited about that, it really just sparks, keeps the energy going. It's helpful."
On the immediate feeling when the buzzer sounded…
"I felt like we left it all out there. I feel like we had players that were doing their job all over the place. I felt like it was a game that we pretty much played the whole game. I was just proud of that. It's the consistency that we're trying to work on and it was evident that we're getting better."
KAREN ASTON, TEXAS HEAD COACH
Opening statement…
"Hats off to K-State. A really inspiring performance by them and that is what I expected. I expected them to perform really well today. I expected them to be motivated from their loss to Kansas. I expected them to play like they have been playing aside from that game. Our team did not perform up to our standards. I did not think they were as competitive as they needed to be. I definitely did not think they were even close to being as competitive today as K-State was. We will get on the plane, go back to the drawing board and figure out as coaches what we can do to be better to help our team."
On how the game got away…
"I would like to say defensively because we have been really good defensively in the last four or five games. I would like to say that it was our lack of cohesiveness defensively that let them get off to a very positive start. They felt confident about the way they were playing. It snowballed on us a little bit. On the flip side of that, we had 10 turnovers in the first half and we finished with 14. Why are we turning the ball over 10 times in the first half? So I think that we were a little lackadaisical, did not attack the zone and did not attack the change in defenses. We did not shoot the ball well today but I think that we have been depending on being able to get the ball inside a little bit. I thought they did a good job clogging that. We just were not patient enough in the first half. Again, we gave them confidence and that is what happens to you when you give a home team confidence."
On K-State's offense…
"They move but we were prepared for that. We have seen teams play that type of offensive system and we were not surprised by anything that they did at all. I am not surprised by the way Kayla Goth played, I am not surprised by Peyton Williams and I am not surprised those other guys made shots. Those two played at a really high level and I think when they do it gives the rest of their team confidence. I do not know if Jeff [Mittie] can answer that better than me but we just did not do a good job of making them uncomfortable today."
On Olamide Aborowa…
"I was not pleased with the way she practiced the last couple of days. We did not have a very good shootaround today. I was a little bit worried about this game based on practice today. She typically gets us off to a really good start defensively and I just did not think she was in a defensive groove today. But I do not know that anybody was."
On playing a team that is coming off a rough loss…
"You try to have conversations. To me, it is a [type of] maturity that you know that every game is going to be the same. Your preparation has to be the same. Your mindset has to be the same. I think that really mature basketball teams and players that have maturity that lead the ones that do not have are the ones that are the most successful in our league. Day in and day out, it is never going to change - what kind of preparation you have to have. When Kansas State shoots the ball well they are a really good team. I thought that they really were the more physical team today."
