K-State Cruises to Win over Oklahoma on Saturday

Jan 05, 2019 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State used a season-best shooting performance in the second quarter and lockdown defense in the third to cruise past Oklahoma, 86-56, on Saturday night in Bramlage Coliseum. K-State improved its home court winning streak to eight games, while senior guard Kayla Goth became the 41st player in school history to reach the career 1,000-point mark.

In the second quarter, K-State (10-4, 1-1 Big 12) would score a season-high for a second quarter with 26 points in the frame and tallied a season-high for field goal percentage in any quarter by shooting 78.6 percent (11-of-14).

Kansas State dashed out to a 12-point lead, 29-17, with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter. K-State used a quick 8-2 run to force an Oklahoma timeout. Rachel Ranke buried a 3-pointer, then Christianna Carr tallied one from the wing and Ranke registered a steal and fastbreak layup to force the timeout and give the Wildcats the 12-point lead.

The lead increased to 18, 40-22, as the Wildcats used a 9-1 run in the final minutes of the second quarter. Kali Jones started the run with a rebound and putback. Jones finished the night with eight points, five rebounds, two blocks and three steals.

Goth then converted an old fashioned 3-point play on a layup and free throw. Jasauen Beard added a driving layup followed by Goth capping the run with a jumper with 3:01 remaining.

Goth, who scored 14 points in the opening half, then beat the halftime buzzer with a free throw line jumper to send K-State into the locker room with a 44-25 lead. The 44 points by K-State in the first half were the most in an opening half this season by the Wildcats.

Late in the third quarter, K-State nailed a three-pointer on three straight possessions over a two-minute stretch to increase its lead to 25, 60-35, with 2:16 remaining. Carr buried a 3-pointer, then Ranke followed with her own and Carr capped it with her fourth of the night.

Defensively, the Wildcats held the Sooners to a 1-of-10 effort from the field in the third quarter. Oklahoma registered their only make on a layup with a second remaining in the quarter.

K-State outscored Oklahoma in the fourth quarter, 22-18, and shot 45.0 percent in the final quarter. The Wildcats would build their largest lead of the night at 34, 80-46, before the Sooners narrowed the game to its final margin.

The Wildcats had four players in double figures, as Ranke notched 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting including a season-high 5-of-11 effort from beyond the arc. She added a career-high six assists and a season-high four steals to her final line.

Goth ended her night with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a 2-of-4 effort from three-point range. The 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award candidate surpassed the 1,000-point mark on a three-pointer from the left corner with 4:28 remaining in the first quarter.

She also dished out five assists and pocketed two steals. Goth is the fourth player in program history with 1,000 or more career points and 400 or more career assists.

Junior forward Peyton Williams registered her career-best seventh double-double this season as she finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The 2019 Katrina McClain Award candidate also tied her career-high with six assists. For her career, Williams has 14 double-doubles and needs one more to tie for 10th in program history.

Carr added her fifth game in double figures, as she finished with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting including a 4-of-8 effort from three-point range.

Oklahoma (5-8, 1-1) was led by Ana Llanusa and Taylor Robertson with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Kansas State ended the night shooting 54.2 percent from the field (32-of-59), including an 11-of-23 performance (.478) from 3-point range. The 11 connections from three-point range ties for K-State's season-high set against Vanderbilt on December 2.

Oklahoma was held to a 28.0 percent effort (14-of-50) and finished 23-of-30 (.767) from the free throw line. The Sooners were forced into 24 turnovers, with K-State scoring 32 points off those turnovers.

K-State handed out a season-high 24 assists on the 32 made field goals. The 24 assists are the most by K-State since dishing out 24 against Kansas on February 24, 2018.

Kansas State will return to the road on Wednesday, as the Wildcats travel to Waco, Texas, to face (8/7) Baylor at 7 p.m. Wednesday's game will be available on the FOX Sports Go app and can be heard on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.

What They Said
JEFF MITTIE, KANSAS STATE HEAD COACH

Opening statement…
"We played very well tonight, coming off of Wednesday's game, which was not a very good performance by us. I did not feel like we were as bad Wednesday as the score necessarily indicated but there obviously were some big problems with some things. So we addressed those in practice and I felt like we got a little bit better. I would not have said our practices were great this week but I thought they were at least purposeful. I did feel like that our group was starting to understand some things a little bit better. I thought they executed some things very well. Obviously, you shoot the ball in and it looks great. I thought our passing was better so I think that is going to lead to better shooting overall. Probably not as good as this. We are probably not as bad as we were the other night and probably not as good here but somewhere in the middle would be nice. That is kind of what we are striving to do."

On Chrissy Carr's defense on Taylor Robertson…
"It was really key. I thought she did a great job on her. I felt like she was there denying her. Robertson did not get many opportunities. She only gets six shots and some of those came very late and she got to the free throw line late in this game. The bulk of the game we limited her opportunities and Chrissy did an excellent job on her."

On getting points off turnovers…
"This team pushes the ball so hard people have trouble getting their defense setup and we had trouble getting our defense set. I felt like I was whipping us to sprint back every play. They play faster than most of the teams that we faced this year. I thought it was key. I thought we were pretty active with the live turnovers. I thought we had a good awareness tonight. You cannot stop [Taylor] Robertson without everybody having an awareness to her. You cannot do it without also having an awareness on [Shaina] Pellington, who has gone for over 30 this year. With the exception of putting them to the free throw line too much, we were pretty solid most of the night."

On putting stock into hot shooting nights…
"We feel like if we get the right shots we will shoot better and move the ball better. We have gotten stagnant. I feel like our shooters have hunted them too much at times. Quality of shots has been what we have needed and we have talked at lengths about that. Tonight, the quality of shots were better. The floor was open, there is no doubt about that. Oklahoma wants a tempo game and trained to balance how fast we could play and it be comfortable for us. That was a constant, us trying to figure that out. I thought our group was pretty solid most of the night. Obviously, we played outstanding so I have no complaints about that. Occasionally you can see that look in their eye, though, especially [Chrissy Carr]'s. You have to start screaming at her from the bench to get the ball where we need it. Her motor gets going and we have to get her to calm down a little bit offensively. When her motor gets going that is when her shot selection is not as good. When she is calm and has her feet set, she is going to knock them down pretty well."

CHRISTIANNA CARR, FRESHMAN GUARD
On playing against Taylor Robertson for the first time since high school…
"I feel like once I came into college I knew that we were going to be prepared a lot more and we were going to be ready to lock up and defend this team overall. We knew when we were coming in that she was one of the top 3-point shooters in the conference right now so she shoots the ball at a high level. For us to be able to show that we are capable of, not only myself locking her down but Rachel (Ranke) was on her at some point, Jasauen (Beard) was on her at some point, that just shows that not only am I am able to do it but the girls next to me are ready to take that responsibility also."

On the atmosphere of the game…
"The atmosphere was definitely really fun to play in. Coming into this, we kind of knew that the crowd was going to be good, so it's always nice to play in front of a good crowd and it's nicer when we have that energy that we came with tonight. I mean, we said it before the game that we have to come with a different level of energy than we did with Iowa State and I thought that we did just that. We did a good job in practice of learning from the Iowa State game and taking all of that energy and moving it towards this game."

KAYLA GOTH, SENIOR GUARD
On surpassing 1,000 points and her night overall…
"It was pretty good. I definitely wanted to get it out of the way (reaching 1,000 points). I mean, you kind of start to get in your own head a little bit about it and everyone's tweeting about it. So trying to get it out of the way and I was trying to score the ball tonight and get some assists too. So it was pretty good."

On the atmosphere of the game...
"I would just say it's one of the main reasons I came to play here, to play in front of crowds like that. I noticed the big crowd when we ran out. That's the main reason we play at a school like this. It's a fun atmosphere. It's fun to get hyped up and get off to a good start like that, that's what makes it fun."

On her mindset entering the game with 999 points...
"Well, losing by 40 at Iowa State kind of helped that because it was very, 'we need to win this game, we need to make a statement that we're not as bad as that 40-point loss.' So it was very much focused on the game plan, focused on what I need to do. It was kind of on the back of my mind if I'm being honest. So just trying to focus on the team in general."

On what went through her mind when she surpassed 1,000 points…
"Nothing, right away honestly. Then I saw all of the signs in the crowd and yea it's cool. I was happy about it."

SHERRI COALE, OKLAHOMA HEAD COACH
On the game…
"Kansas State played really well. I want to give them credit. I thought they were, offensively, so confident. Goth is their leader and we let her get going early. And then defensively, they took Taylor (Robertson) out of it obviously, which was not a surprise, but I don't think we handled it well at all. We stood around and stared at her and stared at each other instead of watching the defense and seeing where the openings were. Then we didn't shoot it well. It's hard to beat anybody shooting 20 percent from the field."

On K-State's defensive effort...
"They're long, and changing defenses messed a little with our inexperienced backcourt. We were very obvious about the decisions we were making - there was very little deception in what we were doing with or without the ball. And they played hard. They just really played hard and were connected and dialed into their game plan."
