Cross Country Travels to Indiana for Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams look to continue their recent success when the squads head to South Bend, Indiana for the 64th annual Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 4 at the Burke Golf Course.

The Invitational, which is named for famed Notre Dame cross country/track and field coach Joe Piane, will get started at 3:15 p.m., CT on Friday with the Women's Gold Race, followed by the Men's Gold Race at 4 p.m., CT.

"As we move into October, the intensity of the season goes up", said Head Coach Ryun Godfrey. "The team is ready for a good performance this weekend. I am excited for them!"

The women's 25-team field includes Akron, Belmont, Cal State Fullerton, Calvin, Central Michigan, Clemson, Eastern Kentucky, Green Bay, Hillsdale, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Indiana State, IUPUI, LSU, Miami (Ohio), Omaha, Fort Wayne, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin, UTEP, Valparaiso, Western Michigan, Wyoming and Youngstown State.

The men's 21-team field includes Akron, Auburn, Cal State Fullerton, Calvin, Clemson, Green Bay, Hillsdale College, Illinois-Chicago, Indiana State, IUPUI, LSU, UMass, Miami (Ohio), Oakland, Fort Wayne, Stephen F. Austin, Utah Valley, UTEP, Valparaiso and Youngstown State.

This will be the first time that the Wildcats will compete in the Joe Piane Invitational.

After earning another second-place finish at the Greeno and Dirksen Invitational back on September 21, the
K-State's men's team was recently recognized by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) with a No. 10 ranking in the Midwest Region. The squad dropped two spots to No. 12 in the rankings on Monday (September 30) despite not competing.

At the Greeno and Dirksen Invitational, the Wildcats were led by sophomore Cooper Schroeder on the men's side, who crossed the finish line at 25:00.6, resulting in an eighth-place finish among 237 competitors. He was among four runners who finished in the Top 25 at the meet, including sophomore Ethan Powell (11th/25:07.7), freshmen Hadley Splechter (13th/25:17.4) and Kerby Depenbusch (25th/25:36.4). Eight of the 11 runners were either freshmen or sophomores with all eight finishing among the team's top nine.

The women's squad, who were depleted by injuries early in the 2019 season, had eight runners for the first time this season at the Greeno and Dirksen Invitational, earning an eighth-place finish. Freshman Jaybe Shufelberger led the way, posting a 23rd place finish at a pace of 18:26.4 during the 5k race. Shufelberger was among four freshmen to finish among the Top 100 at a race with 184 participants.

During the third meet of the season in 2018 for K-State, both squads brought home top-ten finishes at the Rim Rock Farm Classic. The men's team earned a sixth-place finish with 122 points while the women's side paced ahead of 13 other schools, rounding out to a third-place finish with a point total of 106.

- Powell bested his personal record by more than 15 seconds from the 2018 Big 12 Championships, in which, he placed 30th with a time of 25:22.2.
