Oct 16, 2019 | Volleyball
NORMAN, Okla. – K-State set a program record with 119 digs, 36 coming from freshman Dru Kuck, but the Oklahoma Sooners rallied from a two-set hole to take a five-set battle Wednesday night, 20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-16, 16-14, at McCasland Field House.
Kuck led five Wildcats in double-digit digs, as her career-high output equaled the third-highest total in K-State history during the rally-scoring era. Freshman Anna Dixon turned in a career-best 21 kills while Gloria Mutiri added 13.
"I thought it was a significant upgrade from where we were last time out, particularly in the back row," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "I thought our dig effort was really good. Our first contact was improved, and I thought our passing was better. Serving was also more efficient. It's a match we can win."
K-State (6-12, 1-5 Big 12) took the first two sets and later held match point in the fifth set, 14-13. Oklahoma (12-5, 4-2 Big 12) completed its comeback by scoring the night's final three points, capped by back-to-back kills by Ashlynn Dunbar, handing the Cats their fifth straight loss.

Oklahoma's Sarah Maras led her club with 20 kills and hit .373. Libero Keyton Kinley recorded 30 digs and was one of four Sooners to reach double-digit digs.
K-State trailed by as many as five points in the opening set, 16-11, but battled to close on a 9-1 run. Dixon ended the set with seven kills while the Wildcat defense tallied four team blocks, with two coming in the final three points. Vernon led the Cats with three blocks.
The Cats held a lead as large as eight points in Game 2, 18-10. K-State weathered an 8-2 Sooner scoring run that cut its lead to just two but rebounded to tally five of the last six to take a two-set lead. Dixon added five kills on a dozen swings without an error in the set.
Sooners earned their first set win in the third, 25-23, after eight tie scores and four lead changes. Oklahoma opened a 16-12 lead following a 6-0 burst before the Cats clawed to take a one-point lead at 23-22. OU finished by registering the frame's final three points. K-State hit a match-low .071 in the third set.
An 8-1 run catapulted the Sooners to a 14-8 lead midway through the fourth. OU went on to open a nine-point lead, 21-12, and forced a fifth set. Dixon picked up four more kills while Carlson and Mutiri each added three.
Eight of the first 10 points went to the Cats before the teams changed benches in the fifth. Mutiri, a Sand Springs, Oklahoma native, put down four consecutive kills to begin the frame. Later, OU went on its own 8-2 run and leveled the score at 12.
K-State held Oklahoma below .200 in each of the first three sets before the Sooners went on to hit .245 in Set 4 and .333 in the decisive set.
