Hill, Red Raiders Hand Wildcats Three-Set Loss
Oct 02, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Behind a match-high 21 kills from Emily Hill, Texas Tech handed K-State a three-set defeat in the Wildcats' Big 12 home opener Wednesday night at Ahearn Field House, 31-33, 21-25, 20-25.
K-State (6-8, 1-1 Big 12) was held to season lows in both kills (40) and hitting percentage (.161) in its first three-set loss of the season. The Cats failed to hit over .240 in any set and were held under .200 in two of the match's three sets.
"I think that was a frustrating performance, on our end," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "We've been playing significantly better, and felt like we've been making pretty consistent improvement, frankly, most days up until (tonight).
"There were a lot of inconsistencies, on our side. We had a difficult time gaining any type of momentum throughout the course of the match. I think we are capable of playing significantly better, from start to finish."
Sophomore Gloria Mutiri led the Wildcats with a dozen kills while hitting .229 to go with a pair of block assists. Mutiri recorded five kills on nine swings with one error (.444) in the second set.
"I thought Gloria played well," added Fritz. "I wish we would've been able to get her a few more swings. She was by far our most consistent, offensively."
Hill added 10 digs for a double-double effort for the Red Raiders (12-5, 2-1 Big 12). Hill hit .288 with 11 of her 21 kills coming in the opening set.
The first set marked K-State's longest set of the season, in which the Wildcats overcame an early five-point deficit and later had four set-point opportunities. TTU finished the set on a three-point scoring run and converted on its third set-point attempt with a kill by Karrington Jones. Each side turned in a .127 hitting efficiency, with the Red Raiders holding a 19-16 edge in kills.
In total, the opening set saw 11 lead changes and 13 tie scores. Holly Bonde led the Cats with four kills and 11 digs in Set 1.
Bonde went on to set a career best with a match-high 16 digs.
The Wildcats held a late 18-16 lead in the second set following a 5-1 run, only to see Texas Tech close the frame on a 9-3 burst that included two kills by Hill. Hill finished the set with six more kills while hitting at a .400 clip. Tech hit .375 in Set 2 while K-State managed .233.
The Red Raiders never trailed Set 3 after racing out to a 9-3 advantage. TTU closed out the match on Hill's 21st kill after the Cats fought off two match points. Mutiri and Anna Dixon each contributed four kills in the set.
Dixon finished behind Mutiri with 10 kills while Brynn Carlson and Peyton Williams each ended the night with five.
Redshirt sophomore Jacque Smith registered 10 digs, her ninth match this season reaching double figures.
Megan Vernon led the Wildcats with five total blocks (two solo, three assists) while Mutiri and Williams each had two block assists.
The Wildcats take on No. 1 Baylor on Saturday at Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. First serve is set for 2 p.m. and will stream live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Rob Voelker will have the call with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
