Wildcats Earn Gold Medal in Women’s Eight 300 Meter Sprints at Jayhawk Jamboree Sunday
Oct 20, 2019 | Rowing
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team began the 2019-20 racing season with its annual trip to the Jayhawk Jamboree, collecting four medals on the day, including a gold medal in the Women's 300m Eight Sprints Race, held at Burcham Park.
"Racing today was a great break in the training," said Head Coach Patrick Sweeney. "There was much experience gained by our younger races. The athletes raced well and we are able to see how they are developing. As always, the rowing family came out on mass and showed incredible support for our team. It was a great day racing for the Wildcats. The coaching staff and crew really appreciate the consistency of support from the family and friends of this team. It gets more and more impressive every year."
After locking up two spots for the 300m Sprints race from the Women's Collegiate Eight race just minutes before, K-State started off strong and ended the same way as Boat B, consisting of coxswain Kaitlyn Henke, Natasha Johnson, Madison Rebel, Logan Frost, Abigail Dressler, Elizabeth Mummert, Megan Chrisco, Rachel Haskell and Kate Odgers edged out Kansas in the final heat to claim the gold medal.
During the semifinal heat, both the K-State B and K-State A boats would go head-to-head for a shot at gold. K-State B would win the heat over K-State A, leading to the showdown with Kansas in the finals.
During the Collegiate Women's Eight Race earlier in the day, the Wildcats would claim silver and bronze medals from both the K-State A and B boats. K-State B would finish ahead of K-State A with a time of 12:23.3, just seconds ahead from K-State A, who timed in at 12:31.4.
The rowers of Kaitlyn Henke, Logan Frost, Abigail Dressler, Rachel Haskell and Megan Chrisco in Boat B during the Women's Collegiate Four race locked up a bronze medal as well, finishing with a time of 13:43.6, which was 32 seconds short of the Kansas' A boat (13:11.9).
The Wildcats will continue their fall preparation for the 2020 spring racing season as the team will next compete in the Oklahoma Scrimmage in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Saturday, February 29, 2020.
