Wildcats Compete with Oklahoma in Oklahoma Scrimmage on Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Racing down the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Kansas State women's rowing team dispersed five boats in a scrimmage against Oklahoma on Saturday, February 29.

For the fifth-consecutive year, the Wildcats traveled down to the Sooner State in order to gain more experience while improving on technique before partaking in the rest of the 2020 spring schedule.

"I'm really quite pleased with the OU scrimmage this year," said Head Coach Patrick Sweeney. "First, getting three on-water sessions is huge for us as we begin the season. But beyond that, I'm really happy to see how quickly the athletes snapped back into the skill."

Moving outside for the first time after embracing rigorous indoor training regiments during the winter break, K-State looked to find their stride and see what improvements would need to be made for the rest of the rowing season.

"We were able to test out different rates and distances and got a really solid look at what work needs to be done at the upcoming spring camp," said Sweeney.

For the younger athletes seeing action for the first time on the water, the Oklahoma Scrimmage provides great experience for those rowers looking to make an impact in the upcoming regattas.

Boating assignments and seating arrangements were tinkered with throughout the day in order to test the athlete's skills and versatility in the process of a live scrimmage.

"It takes versatility and composure to transition to on-water rowing after a long indoor winter grind," said Sweeney. "I am pleased with the athletes and grateful for OU's staff for having us back for another effective scrimmage this year."

The Wildcats move into the heart of the 2020 spring schedule as the team travels to Sacramento, California for the Sac State Duel on Sunday, March 8.
