Wildcats Travel to Sacramento for Sac State Duel Sunday
Mar 06, 2020 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Competing in its first official race of the 2020 season, the Kansas State women's rowing team heads west to Sacramento, California for the Sac State Duel at Lake Natoma on Sunday, March 8.
Â
"This weekend will be great for our team," said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "I would prefer to have the schedule like last year because then you get more chances for learning and that's really what this one race is. Just trying to learn as much as possible. There are no second chances. They have one chance to get it right, so they have to be prepared and zoned in completely."
Â
The Sac State Duel will give the team an important opportunity to put the pieces together.
Â
"The girls will work on how to handle the actual race plan, how they get off the start, how they hold it together under pressure," said Sweeney.
Â
The Wildcats will start Sunday's duel against Sacramento State at 10:30 a.m., CT. Races will go off at 20-minute centers. A total of five boats will compete this weekend which includes 1v8+, 2v8+, 3v8+, 1v4+, and 2v4+.
Â
Following the race on Sunday, the Wildcats will set up spring camp at Lake Natoma for a week-long training camp where the team will focus on techniques and strategies out on the water. Camp will enable the staff to tweak and finalize line-ups for the season.
Â
"The team will be set pretty much by the end of the camp," said Sweeney. "The Oklahoma (Scrimmage) showed us a lot. We started moving stuff around and this one will show us a little more. I would expect to come out of camp with a lot of mileage and a solid idea of line-ups."
Â
For the 2019 Hornet Invitational, K-State accumulated nine first-place finishes over the two-day regatta. This will be the third-straight year the Wildcats will row against Hornets.
Â
A full recap of the event will be made available on kstatesports.com following the duel. Follow the team on Twitter for live updates on race day.
Â
When the team returns home from Lake Natoma, the Wildcats will have a few weeks off before heading to participate in the Sunshine State Invitational on Friday, April 3 in Sarasota, Florida. Â
