K-State Sees Four in Double Figures in Exhibition Win
Oct 29, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State saw four of its five starters reach double figures on Tuesday night in Bramlage Coliseum for a 75-59 win over Washburn in the first of two exhibition games for the Wildcats.
"I thought there were some good things tonight," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie. "We got off to a great start, loved the energy, loved the defense, it was creating a lot of our offense. I thought that our group was really getting after Washburn. We had trouble sustaining that, foul trouble was impactful in that stretch. We lacked some discipline but overall I liked what I saw. I liked that we responded when Washburn made the run on us. While I don't like that run happening we'll try to correct that and answer that better next time but I liked the answer that we gave in the fourth quarter."
Redshirt freshman Ayoka Lee led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and pulled in seven rebounds. Senior Jasauen Beard tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Redshirt sophomore Cymone Goodrich saw her first game action since the 2018-19 season-opener and responded with 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Senior Angela Harris added 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Washburn was led by Shelbe Piggie and Hunter Bentley with 11 points each. Bentley would add 11 rebounds to her final line.
K-State raced out to a 27-9 lead after the first quarter. The Wildcats used a 19-2 run to end the frame to build the advantage. Lee scored eight points to pace the effort. The Wildcats finished from close range in the opening frame, carding a 20-2 lead in points in the paint.
The Wildcats would build its lead to 21, 30-9, with 7:50 remaining in the second quarter. The Ichabods would outscore K-State in the final 7:30 of the frame, 14-8, but the Wildcats would enter the break with a 38-23 advantage.
K-State shot 46.9 percent from the field in the opening half and held Washburn to a 25.8 field goal percentage. Goodrich led the Wildcats in the first half with 10 points.
In the first six minutes of the third quarter, Washburn outscored K-State, 18-3, to knot the game at 41. The Wildcats were 1-of-8 from the field to open the quarter.
K-State finished the third quarter 1-of-11 from the field, but stayed in front, 52-47, because of a 12-of-14 performance from the free throw line.
The Wildcats used an 8-0 run to begin the fourth quarter and give themselves some breathing room with a 60-47 lead. Lee tallied five of the eight points.
After a three-pointer from Washburn to close the K-State lead to eight, 61-53, Harris answered with a three of her own to start a 14-6 run to end the game. The Wildcats would outscore the Ichabods by 11 in the final frame, 23-12.
K-State shot 41.0 percent (25-of-61) from the field and ended at 71.0 percent (22-of-31) from the free throw line. After shooting 17.6 percent in the first quarter, Washburn improved to 30.0 percent (21-of-70) for the night. The Ichabods were 11-of-34 from beyond the arc to keep the contest close.

WHAT THEY SAID
JEFF MITTIE, K-STATE HEAD COACH
Opening statement…
"I thought there were some good things tonight. We got off to a great start, loved the energy, loved the defense, it was creating a lot of our offense.
On what went well tonight...
"I thought our transition was effective at times. We had players that had to play through fatigue tonight and we didn't always do it well, but when we got back going I thought there were good things there. We were able to use (Ayoka) Lee when she was in the game, but unfortunately foul trouble impacted her, but I liked the way we used Lee when she was in the game. We'll have to continue to get better at that, but all in all, not bad."
On Ayoka Lee...
"There's two things; one she gives us a big target in there and she draws attention so that opens up the floor for everybody else as well. Two, from a defensive rebounding standpoint, she gets an outlet she's pretty good at the outlet and our transition game that area gets better. I just think she's a big target, she's got good hands, good feet. I think she's a player that is just going to keep progressing."
On Rachel Ranke, Christianna Carr, and Emma Chapman not playing tonight...
"They procrastinated something that I wanted everybody to get done before the season. They'll play on Friday. They got it done, they just didn't get it done when I asked them to get it done. They are fine. They got it done but I think the message is, hey we aren't going to procrastinate things. I was proud of our group tonight, I thought we did some great things, and we will have Peyton (Williams) for Friday as well, so we'll have a full bench on Friday."
On Cymone Goodrich...
"She has worked really hard to get back. I'm really proud of her. Her defense has been much better than it has been. She is right, she hasn't done contact since July. You're not talking about a long time. Emilee Ebert has only had five practices. Savannah Simmons played one through four tonight. If there's an area I'm really proud of our group tonight, while it didn't always look pretty and there are certainly things that weren't great out there, we had players having to figure things out on the fly tonight, and Cymone was certainly impactful and I was proud of a big group of players that played well on the fly tonight."
ANGELA HARRIS, SENIOR GUARD
On the mindset after the and-one play...
"Most definitely we got to come back and get this win. We had a little situation there where we let them take the lead so plays like that and-one is energy, an energy giver. So if I'm excited, the teams excited so that's just what I was trying to do, get the team excited."
On how she feels about slashing to the rim…
"Most definitely, growing up I've always been a slasher. I kind of developed the three point shot on the fly in college so all through high school I was always a slasher. And against the boys all the time, I'm always challenging them so yeah most definitely that's just my game."
CYMONE GOODRICH, SOPHOMORE GUARD
On how it feels to play basketball again...
"It feels really good, like in my opinion I think I had a year off of basketball completely, so just being able to play injury free feels amazing honestly."
On her performance in her first game back...
"For sure conditioning I think that's always been a struggle for me, but it's always been a process. And I think today I did pretty well. Also today I left a lot of points on the board. I missed a lot of layups which could obviously get better, but it's the first game back so it will obviously happen but I'm proud of myself I would say."
RON MCHENRY, WASHBURN HEAD COACH
On his thoughts following the game...
"The game kind of fell into what we've been looking for. Made some nice passes, hit some big threes. This game tonight was just going to be… we couldn't go inside, we tried it early and they were swatting it. So you know, okay, now we've got to drive and kick and hit some threes. That's more threes than we normally shoot, but in this game that's what it called for. We made a run. I needed to see some other players; I need to get that group off. They're not quite in game shape, and I don't want to run them through some injuries here early. We've gotta get them off the floor and we need to see that bench. We've got a lot of kids down there that are going to have to play for us in some role or some capacity in a brand new system, and I need to see them on the floor."
On how often K-State got to the free throw line…
"We were just fouling. Y'know I don't know what the deal was there, we just couldn't stay between them and the basket. Y'know they had some matchup problems, obviously. They had some big guards on our little guards; the big kid inside was a tough matchup, there's no doubt about it. We got out of it what we… other than y'know you're trying to win every game you go play, but we did some things that we've been thinking about doing, and y'know we've gotta build on it from here. All in all, we kind of got out of it what we probably needed."
