K-State Falls in Overtime Thriller at Oklahoma
Oct 03, 2019 | Soccer
NORMAN, Oklahoma – Despite a three-point night from Brookelynn Entz, K-State came out on the short end, as Oklahoma captured a 3-2 overtime decision at John Crain Field on Thursday night. This was the second time in the last three matches that K-State has played an overtime match.
"We had a little more of a killer mentality," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about his team's offensive performance. "We scored two goals in conference play, which we haven't done in awhile. That is a big positive moving forward."
K-State's two goals on Thursday night, equaled K-State's Big 12 total in 2018 and were the most in a Big 12 match for the Wildcats since a 3-2 loss at Oklahoma on October 22, 2017. Dibbini was pleased with how K-State played during the run of play.
"It was a tough match. I thought we played very well and we did everything right. We just couldn't contain one player and we knew that going into the match. We had a matchup issue with Kaylee Dao, who is really good especially on set pieces. In a game like this, you have to limit corners and not give them services and no fouls in the back half because that is their bread and butter."
K-State (2-8-2, 0-3-0 Big 12) captured the early lead in the 20th minute. K-State put pressure on the Oklahoma 18-yard box and gathered a loose ball on the right side of the frame.
Entz drew the attention of the defense and slotted a pass to senior Laramie Hall, who cut into a wide-open space from 16 yards. Hall sent her right-footed shot past Oklahoma goalkeeper Nikki Panas into the lower right corner.
The goal was Hall's team-leading fourth of the season. The product of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is tied for second in school history for career goals with seven and is second for career points with 21.
The assist from Entz was her third of the season to pace the Wildcats. For her career, the junior from Newton, Kansas, has dished out six assists, which is tied for third in program history.
In the 21st minute, Oklahoma (6-4-3, 1-1-1) had an opportunity to even the match on a penalty kick. Oklahoma's Kaylee Dao attempted the kick, but K-State redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Harris tipped the ball past the left post with her right hand to keep K-State in the lead. Harris was credited with four saves in the first half.
In the 30th minute, Oklahoma knotted the match at one apiece. On the fifth corner kick of the first half, Oklahoma's Megan Reilly sent her ball toward the near post and found the head of Dao who sent it into the back of the net.
The Wildcats retook the lead early in the second half. Hall played the ball ahead to a wide-open Christina Baxter behind the Oklahoma defense. Baxter gathered and crossed the ball to Entz.
While moving into position to attempt a shot, Entz was brought down in the 18-yard box. Entz stepped forward and calmly buried K-State's first penalty kick of the season into the lower right corner. This was the second converted penalty kick in program history and first since October 27, 2017, against Iowa State.
"I think we did well offensively," said Entz about her team's offensive attack. "We were getting up there and getting our chances. We finished two, which is really good to see that we got our first two Big 12 goals this season. Obviously, we wanted to win but that makes this hard tonight."
The goal was the first of the season by Entz and the eighth of her career which is the top career mark for goals. She also is the third player in program history to reach 20 career points.
Oklahoma squared the match at two in the 62nd minute. With an indirect kick just outside the K-State 18-yard box on the right side of the field, the Sooners sent the ball into the six-yard box and again found the head of Dao.
In the first overtime in the 98th minute, Dao completed her hat trick with a third header off the eighth corner kick of the night for the Sooners. Reilly served the ball in from the right corner for her second assist of the night.
Oklahoma held a 25-13 edge in total shots and a 10-7 lead in shots on goal. The Sooners tallied an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. K-State's Harris finished the night with seven saves.
Following the match, Entz was looking forward to how the team responds for Sunday's match at Oklahoma State.
"I think we take confidence that we can play with these teams. We were right there. We were winning the game twice tonight. I think we are learning to hold our lead and not give up when we get on top. Hopefully that will help us on Sunday.
K-State will face 25th-ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Sunday's match will be streamed on ESPN+ and will be available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com.
