K-State Grad Gandon Qualifies for PGA's Houston Open

MONTGOMERY, Texas – Recent K-State grad Jeremy Gandon spent a good chunk of his Monday evening booking a hotel and trying to find a caddy, a welcomed headache after shooting a bogey-free 67 (-5) and emerging from a five-man playoff as one of four qualifiers for the PGA's Houston Open at Woodforest Golf Club Monday.
"I'm glad I'm staying for the week and not just for the day," Gandon laughed after pondering if he had enough clothes to make it through the weekend.
The record-setting Wildcat who spent his first summer after college playing on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada and qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour's Q-School Second Stage last week, used five birdies to tie for third with four other players seeking one of the top four spots into this weekend's PGA event on the Tournament Course at Golf Club of Houston.
Two competitors found the water on the opening hole of the playoff, then the remaining trio parred the 20th hole before Gandon holed a wedge shot for eagle and a berth into the Houston Open, a tournament on golf's grandest stage with a $7.5 million purse. Play begins Thursday and continues through Sunday's final round with coverage on the Golf Channel and NBC Golf.
"It's what I've always wanted," Gandon said of the PGA debut. "It's just one event. You've got to do everything you can to play as many as possible, but it's going to be a great opportunity. I'm hoping to give my best and see where it ends up. It'll be a good way to see where my game is at, and where the best players are at, and how they compare."
Official pairings and tee times are slated to be released Tuesday afternoon, but Gandon will join a field that includes K-State alum and PGA Tour veteran Robert Streb and become the third Wildcat to play a PGA top-level event in the past two years along with Ben Kern (2018 PGA Championship).
As for the weekend wardrobe, relief may be on the way as the K-State men's golf team also heads to Houston this week for the second Big 12 Match Play Championship at Houston Oaks Golf Club, Friday through Sunday.
