K-State Takes Down TCU in Five Sets Saturday
Nov 02, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State closed out a five-set victory over TCU Saturday night by scoring the match's final nine points to sweep the season series with the Horned Frogs, 25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-7, at Ahearn Field House.
The nine-point run, which included three blocks by Peyton Williams, came behind the service of freshman Teana Adams-Kaonohi. Adams-Kaonohi picked up an ace during the spurt while freshman Anna Dixon capped the victory with her 11th kill of the night. K-State (8-14, 3-7 Big 12) sweeps the season set with TCU (7-13, 2-8 Big 12) for the first time since 2014.
"Tremendous, and from a serving perspective, a little bit of redemption for her" head coach Suzie Fritz said Adams-Kaonohi's service run. "Early on (in the match), she had a few critical misses and wasn't stringing points together for us. But she was really good when we needed her the most.
"I thought we did some tremendous things at the net in front of her and got some big blocks in key moments. What really stood out to me was our ability to get productive touches at the net, be able to get some quality digs from those and then be able to convert those into kill production. That sequence was tremendous."
The Wildcats recorded four of their 15 blocks in the final set, limiting the Horned Frogs to a .040 hitting efficiency, while the Cats' offense totaled seven kills without an error on 18 swings (.389), Williams picked up three kills on three swings in Set 5 and ended the night with 11 kills at a.348 clip.
Brynn Carlson and Gloria Mutiri spearheaded the K-State offense with 13 kills apiece. Mutiri hit a team-best .444, as the sophomore opposite tallied six kills on 12 swings without an error (.500) in the final two frames.
"That's the Glo we need," Fritz added of Mutiri's performance. "We need her to be a beast and she was unstoppable at times. We were trying to get her going. Brynn Carlson, as well, continues to take really big swings in big moments.
"In my mind, if Brynn, Gloria and Peyton can do what they did tonight, we can play with a lot of people."
The trio of Carlson, Mutiri and Williams accounted for 37 of the Cats' 57 kills on the night and combined to produce a .341 hitting percentage. K-State hit .255 in the match while limiting TCU to .199.
Williams recorded eight blocks assists while Megan Vernon added seven and Dixon had a career-high six. Six different Wildcats tallied multiple blocks in the match, helping the Cats produce their second-highest total this season.
Adams-Kaonohi collected her first career double-double, as she handed out 22 assists to go with 10 digs. Three Cats reached double-figure digs, as Loren Hinkle had a team-high 16 and Dru Kuck added 10.
K-State weathered an early 6-1 run by the Frogs in the opening set, a run that handed TCU a 9-6 lead, and countered by scoring seven of the next eight points. The Cats would never trail in the set again and closed on a 3-1 burst that included two kills from Carlson. Williams totaled five kills in the set while Carlson chipped in four, as the offense produced a .419 efficiency to TCU's .129.
The Horned Frogs slowed K-State's offense in the second set with four team blocks as they limited the Wildcats to a .067 hitting percentage with seven kills. Four of the game's first five points went to the Frogs and their lead swelled as large as eight in a wire-to-wire win.
The third set saw Carlson and Holly Bonde put down four kills apiece. A late five-point burst erased a three-point deficit and handed the Wildcats a two-point lead at 22-20. Bonde ended the night with six kills and a career-high four block assists.
Six service aces aided the Frogs in forcing a fifth set. Audrey Nalls accounted for four of the six aces, including a string of three straight aces. The TCU offense hit .424 and were led by Katie Clark's five kills on seven swings without an error. Clark finished the night with a match-high 17 kills at a .419 clip.
TCU served up 13 aces, a season high by any K-State opponent. Nalls led the way with five.
Afedo Manyang was the only other Horned Frog to reach double-digit kills, as she added 11 on 22 attacks with one error (.455). Four Frogs turned in 10 or more digs, led by libero Dani Dennison's match-high 18.
The Wildcats next hit the court on Saturday, November 9 as they host Iowa State at 6:30 p.m. at Ahearn Field House. The match will stream live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Free, live audio is also available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
