Cyclones Complete Sweep of Wildcats Saturday
Nov 09, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Iowa State limited K-State to 30 kills and a .108 hitting percentage in completing a three-set sweep Saturday night at Ahearn Field House, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.
Iowa State (16-8, 7-5 Big 12) produced 14 more total kills than the Wildcats (8-15, 3-8 Big 12), as the Cyclones hit .217 with two players reaching 10 kills (Eleanor Holthaus, Avery Rhodes). K-State's kill total marked a season low without a single player cracking double figures.
"Iowa State is a really good team," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "Coming into it, we had three objectives: Win the serving and passing battles and try to play with them in transition. I didn't think, quite frankly, that we did any of those things. We worked all week to try to be good in those areas and then when we got into the match, we didn't hold up in any of them.
"But I don't want to take away from what I think is a good Iowa State team. I think they play consistent. They don't hurt themselves very much and they're so good in the dig-to-convert transition phase. They were by far better in serve and pass."
After the opening set, ISU held a 33-19 edge in kill production while holding the Cats under a .100 efficiency in Sets 2 and 3. K-State never led in the second and third frames after the first set saw three lead changes.
Freshman Anna Dixon led the Cats' offense with eight kills. Brynn Carlson added six while Gloria Mutiri finished with five. Middle blockers Megan Vernon and Peyton Williams each turned in four.
Each side produced 11 kills in the first, with K-State out-hitting Iowa State, .185-.161. Four different Wildcats tallied multiple kills, paced by Vernon with three kills on three swings. The Cyclones opened an 11-4 lead, including a six-point scoring run, before the Cats put together a five-point run to tie the score at 14.
K-State laid claim to a late 19-18 lead, only to see ISU close on a 7-3 spurt. Michal Schuler served up two of Iowa State's four aces in the set. Holthaus led the way for Iowa State with four kills on eight attacks.
The Cats were forced into eight attacking errors in the second set, hitting .088 with 11 kills. A kill by Candelaria Herrera handed the Cyclones a 15-10 lead. K-State began to chip away and clawed within a point, 19-18, before ISU tallied six of the final eight points. Herrera finished the set with five kills of Iowa State's 16 kills.
In the third set, K-State dug itself an early nine-point hole at 12-3, as Iowa State picked up eight kills in its early burst. The Cats would get as close as two, 19-17, after a late 6-1 run. Rhodes put down six kills on seven swings, including two of the final three points, as the Cyclones finished on a 5-0 run.
Dixon collected three of K-State's eight kills in the set. As a team, the Wildcats hit .073 in the third.
Iowa State setter Piper Mauck produced a double-double with 35 assists and a match-high 12 digs. Mauck was one of three Cyclones to serve multiple aces, with ISU recording seven aces to the Cats' two.
Holly Bonde and Williams led the Wildcat defense with three block assists apiece. Vernon added two, with the Cats ending with six total team blocks. Freshman Dru Kuck registered a team-best 11 digs.
Iowa State swept the season series and extended its winning streak to seven in the series.
Next up, K-State faces a road test at No. 1 Texas on Wednesday. The match will get started at 7 p.m. from Gregory Gymnasium and will air on the Longhorn Network and the ESPN app. Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
