Cats Suffer Setback Wednesday Night
Nov 20, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State's Gloria Mutiri hit a career-high .533 and picked up 10 kills, but Oklahoma used 16 kills from Ashlynn Dunbar to hand the Wildcats a three-set loss Wednesday night at Ahearn Field House, 20-25, 14-25, 17-25.
Mutiri, a sophomore, needed just 15 swings to produce her career-best efficiency. Freshman Anna Dixon added six kills at a .250 clip while Brynn Carlson put down seven kills for K-State (8-18, 3-11 Big 12).
"I thought Gloria (Mutiri) was tremendous," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "I was very pleased with our young passers; Dru Kuck and Loren Hinkle, specifically, I thought that was by far their best ball-handling match.
"We played with really good spontaneity, at times, against a very good spontaneous team. They're third in the league right now for a reason. They make you play long in transition and, for me, those were our bright spots."
Dunbar produced her match-high kill total at a .314 clip while Paige Anderson added eight kills (.500) to give the Sooners (17-8, 9-5 Big 12) a season sweep of the Wildcats. Oklahoma limited the Cats to a .119 hitting efficiency while hitting .298.
"You've got to give credit to your opponent," Fritz added. "They're pretty good at the net and they're maybe even better behind it. They are the leader in our conference in opponent attack efficiency, they make it very difficult to kill the ball. They're pretty tenacious defensively, so I wasn't necessarily expecting that we would have an off-the-charts offensive night. But we needed to temper that with them not hitting .298.
"You can't do one thing well as a volleyball team and expect to win matches, it just isn't the way that works. You've got to put all phases together and we are still a work in progress."
The K-State defense tallied 10 team blocks, spearheaded by Peyton Williams' seven total blocks (1 solo, 6 assists). Carlson and Megan Vernon each registered three block assists, as six Wildcats recorded multiple blocks.
Hinkle boasted 11 digs, her 15th match in double figures, to lead the Cats. Holly Bonde chipped in six digs to go with five kills.
The Sooners hit .300 in the opening set, getting five kills by Dunbar and four from Anderson, and used an 8-1 run to open a five-point lead, 11-6. Later in the frame, a four-point scoring run pulled the Cats within two at 18-16 before OU responded with a 3-0 spurt. Mutiri supplied five kills on eight swings.
Set 2 saw Oklahoma lead throughout, opening a two-set lead as the Sooners forced K-State into more attacking errors (8) than kills (7) produced. Dunbar added five more kills, including two as part of a 10-1 OU run to end the set. Williams tallied three block assists in the set.
The third set held eight tie scores and six lead changes, as the Cats used a pair of three-point scoring tuns to open an 8-6 lead. Oklahoma went on to score eight of the next 10 points during a 13-4 burst. Dunbar's sixth kill of the frame ended the match, as she accounted for two of the final three kills for the Sooners. Dixon added three kills on six swings without an error while Mutiri put down three kills on three attacks.
OU libero Keyton Kinley dug a match-high 14 balls. Brianna Kadiku led Oklahoma with seven total blocks while Dunbar finished with four.
The Sooners held a 42-31 edge in total kills and a 7-2 advantage in service aces.
Setters Sarah Dixon and Teana Adams-Kaonohi handed out 15 and 10 assists, respectively.
The Wildcats' final home match is set for Saturday against No.3 Baylor, as K-State will honor its senior class following the match. Senior Day is set for a 3 p.m. start and will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
