Second Half Rally Falls Short for K-State

Nov 24, 2019 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – A furious fourth quarter rally by Kansas State on Sunday afternoon fell short, as UT Arlington snapped K-State's 10-game home winning streak over non-conference opponents with a 57-53 decision at Bramlage Coliseum.

"Disappointed with the outcome obviously," said K-State head coach Jeff Mittie. "We struggled all day. Really did not play well until maybe the fourth. We played a little bit better in the fourth and made a little bit of a push in the fourth."

K-State (3-1) entered the fourth quarter trailing by nine, 43-34, and had gained momentum by scoring six of the final eight points of the third quarter to close the gap. UT Arlington (4-0) was able to rebuild its lead to 14, 50-36, with 7:17 to play in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats narrowed the game to three, 54-51, with 42 seconds to play with the assistance of an 15-4 run which was highlighted by seven points from Christianna Carr. The Wildcats pulled within three after two free throws from Angela Harris.

The Lady Mavericks received a clutch jumper from Terryn Milton with 12 seconds on the clock to give them a five-point lead, 56-51. Carr converted a driving layup after a timeout to bring K-State back to within three, 56-53. UT Arlington was able to close the game with a free throw by Claire Chastain with seven seconds to play.

In the first half, UT Arlington used a decisive 16-4 run in the second quarter to construct a 12-point lead at the half, 32-20. The 20 first half points by the Wildcats were the fewest since scoring 16 at West Virginia on January 26, 2019.

Kansas State was shorthanded on Sunday, as the Wildcats played without junior guard Rachel Ranke, redshirt sophomore guard Cymone Goodrich and sophomore guard Savannah Simmons due to injuries.

Despite the absences, the Wildcats had at least three players reach double figures for the fourth time this season, led by senior forward Peyton Williams. Williams carded her third double-double in as many games played for her this season with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

With her 18 rebounds, Williams moved into 14th on the K-State career rebounds list with 709 to her name. She is the 15th player in program history to haul in 700 or more career rebounds.

With her 16 points, the All-America candidate from Topeka, Kansas, moved into 28th on the K-State career scoring list with 1,163 points.

Joining Williams in double figures were Carr and Harris with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Carr was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

UT Arlington also had three players in double figures paced by Milton with 18 points. Marie Benson added 16 and Chastain tallied 14.

K-State shot a season-low 25.0 percent (17-of-68) from the field, while UT Arlington checked in at 38.3 percent (23-of-60). The Wildcats held a 53-33 advantage on the boards.

The Wildcats will leave the friendly confines of Bramlage Coliseum for the first time on November 29 and 30 for the 17th annual Junkanoo Jam in Bimini, Bahamas. Kansas State, Memphis, LSU and Michigan State make up the Bimini Division of the event.

K-State will face Memphis on Friday, November 29, at 2 p.m. (CT), and will face either LSU or (15/16) Michigan State on Saturday, November 30, at either 3:30 p.m. (CT), or 5:45 p.m. (CT).

All games will be streamed live at FloHoops.com. To access the live event coverage and replays of the Junkanoo Jam, users must sign up to become FloPRO subscribers on FloHoops.com.

The games will also be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com.

What They Said
JEFF MITTIE, HEAD COACH

Opening statement…
"Disappointed with the outcome obviously. We struggled all day. Really did not play well until maybe the fourth. We played a little bit better in the fourth and made a little bit of a push in the fourth. Disappointed with the outcome, disappointed that we didn't play better."

On trying to score the basketball...
"I wish I had that answer. We didn't obviously have that answer. We did have a good number of our players out there struggling. We were trying to get to the free throw line, trying to get Peyton (Williams) as many touches without her having to navigate the physicality across the lane. We were setting her up on that left block. We were able to get better stuff out of that, but ultimately we just struggled making the right play a lot today."

On playing with a depleted depth chart...
"I think the difficulty is we had some players playing positions they hadn't even practiced until yesterday. We were hopeful we were going to have a couple players and things didn't materialize. They just didn't make the progress until yesterday. Macke and Chapman, they were in the guard rotation. They hadn't played that spot a lot, so that's a lot to put on them. I thought Laura gave us a life. I thought she played hard. She struggled shooting the ball. She had some shots out there that were opportunities, but I thought she played hard and gave us a lift. I thought Emma struggled in the first half, freshman right? We're asking a lot of her. We're asking her, as a freshman, to 'hey, we need you to play two-guard today.' So I give her credit for just trying to do whatever she could to help us."

On the turnovers…
"I think just trying to do too much. We had some timely ones when we were down ten when we really just needed to have a good possession. Probably at that point Angela (Harris) is trying to do too much and we had others obviously but these things - when you play like this it really falls on me to get this team to be able to play better. We just struggled this week with some things."

On shooting 25 percent from the field...
"Shot selection in the first wasn't very good. I thought it got better but then Arlington has a lot of energy and they 're starting to sense that they might have a chance at the upset. We had some wide open ones but like i said, those players were struggling, Angela was struggling to get something going so then I think we just forced things. Effort was good. You look at the rebound numbers, twenty-four offensive rebounds. We struggled to get the ball to Ayoka today. The worse we shot, the more crowded it got in there to throw it to her. They were doing an excellent job of playing the way the game was being played. They were going to make us knock a couple down before they come guard us, and I thought they played very well."

On injuries…
"Rachel (Ranke) was available, emergency only. I don't know what you define an emergency., I just felt like it was in her best interest not to play her. She did warm up because she needed to see how it felt. We thought Simmons was going to be able to play on Thursday but it did not get better. It did not progress. Goodrich is being evaluated. I don't know the answer to that. Simmons and Ranke have a better chance than Goodrich does at being back. How quickly? I don't know because I really thought we would have both of them today and it just wasn't a very good week."

On if this game was a hangover…
"I don't think this is that, no. I don't think this is that at all. I think this was just some circumstances that we didn't handle as well as we could have. I thought our group was trying. This game is easy when you don't have to think real hard. Against Oral Roberts, it was real easy. We were playing and it was easy. Now you got a bunch of players playing out of position, doing different things, trying to do things differently. We're trying to coach them as best we can and so I just think a combination of things today. We just couldn't will our way to a victory today and yeah, we'll see if we can get better, but I don't think it was that. I didn't see that in practice. Unfortunately in practice the consistency we had trouble with was just some of the things we were dealing with this week. So I thought our group was trying and I just think the early frustration snowballed on us and we didn't handle that well."

PEYTON WILLIAMS, SENIOR FORWARD
On UTA hitting big shots to stop the K-State momentum...
"It's tough to compete when you're not having a great shooting day and the other team, like you said, in critical moments goes down and hits really tough shots. In that last play, Angela (Harris) gave the best defensive effort she could give, and it still goes in. It's tough to coax effort and energy out of a young team when they see that their efforts aren't working. For the most part, we had some younger leaders step up. Chrissy (Carr) was trying to encourage everyone, saying just to focus as much as you can. Defense, defense, defense, we're in this if we want it. I think we're making strides in that area, but it's tough."

On UTA collapsing in the lane...
"I like the lane. It's where I live most of the time. It's tough, because I like playing with Yoki (Lee). When they collapse in the lane, it makes it tough for me to work off of her and do what we like to do in the lane. It makes it tougher. Obviously I didn't have a great shooting game outside of the lane. When I'm not making shots outside, it makes it tough to not be able to resort to something I like to do."

On the upcoming tournament in the Bahamas...
"It's nice to go somewhere else since we've been playing at home. We love playing at home, but to get some experience that's completely different than what we'll get down the road is kind of fun for a team. Combining the element of being somewhere new, but also honing in and collectively fine tuning the areas we've talked about at home and trying to find that in a different location, I think that's the most helpful."
