
Ingvaldsen’s Title Highlights Day One of Big 12 Indoor Championship

LUBBOCK, Texas – Kansas State junior Helene Ingvaldsen became the 12th individual Big 12 Champion in the women's weight throw in K-State history, while seven individuals secured their spot in Saturday's event finals, as the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the first day of the Big 12 Indoor Championship in Lubbock, Texas on Friday.
Through the first day of competition, the K-State women stand in first place with 46 points and the K-State men stand in eighth with 6 points through 5 of 19 scored events.
In the first event final of the Big 12 Championship, Ingvaldsen recorded a winning mark of 20.45m/67-01.25 on her fifth throw to win her first Big 12 Indoor title. Ingvaldsen becomes the second Wildcat to win the event in the last three years, while also leading a group of Wildcats to place in the top-eight of the event, including Shaelyn Ward (third), Ashley Petr (fifth) and Taylor Latimer (seventh), earning 22 points in the event.
"It's pretty fun to be a part of, having four quality throwers in this conference is just huge," Assistant Coach Nathan Ott said. "I think the toughest thing coming in was controlling some of the expectations, but I think the girls handled it well."
K-State found similar success in the women's pentathlon on Friday, as the Wildcats placed three individuals in the top-five overall, earning 18 points.
Juniors Lauren Taubert and Ariel Okorie found themselves at the top of the standings early on in the pentathlon, as Okorie and Taubert placed second and third in the 60-meter hurdles to open the competition. In the pentathlon high jump, senior Morgan Coffman led the competition by winning the event with a jump of 1.76m/5-09.25.
In the pentathlon long jump, Taubert situated herself in second-place, 133 points behind Texas' Ashton Zamzow. In the final event, Taubert won the 800 meters in 2:15.95, placing her second at the end of the competition with a personal best 4,100 points, which places her 11th in the country.
In addition to Taubert's second-place finish, Okorie put together some strong performances including a personal-best throw of 11.29m/37-00.50 in the shot put. Okorie went on to finish with a season-best 3,938 points to place third, while Coffman placed fifth behind a personal best 3,796 points.
In the men's and women's long jump finals, two Wildcats found their way to the podium, including junior Aaron Booth and sophomore Taishia Pryce. Pryce, jumping for the second time this indoor season, leaped 6.19m/20-03.75 on her second attempt, which ranks seventh all-time in K-State indoor history.
On the track, seven individuals secured spots in the finals on Saturday, including Kurt Loevenstein (800 meters), Travis Hodge (1,000 meters), Ranae McKenzie (400 meters), Alex Ferguson (600-yards), Antoni Hoyte-Small (600-yards) and Kassidy Johnson (1,000 meters).
In the men's 1,000 meters, Hodge recorded the second-fastest preliminary time on Friday in 2:26.22, which also ranks as the ninth-fastest 1,000 meter time in K-State indoor history. It also marked the first time Hodge competed in the event this season.
Continuing on Saturday, the men's heptathletes will look to finish strong, as senior Simone Fassina stands in third with with 3,049 points followed by freshman Matas Adamonis in fifth with 2,938 points and Kyle Parr in 11th with 2,620 points.
Competition will resume on Saturday, as the Wildcats will round out the Big 12 Indoor Championship. The final day of competition features 28 event finals and the crowning of the team champions. Saturday's events begin at 11:00 a.m. and will stream live on FloTrack.
