Cats Begin Big 12 Play Against Sooners, Cowgirls

MANHATTAN, Kan.?– No. 33 K-State women's tennis will begin Big 12 play this weekend as the Wildcats travel south to take on the No. 30 Oklahoma Sooners on Friday and the 11th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Sunday.
Last weekend, the Wildcats swept No. 40 Wichita State, 7-0, at home to close non-conference play.
At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Margot Decker defeated Sandra Honigova in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, while sophomore Maria Linares also won in three sets against Esther Thebault, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) from the No. 2 spot.
Freshman Karine-Marion Job's win over Lingwei Kong, 6-2, 6-3, extended her singles record to 10-2, remaining the team's best in singles.
In doubles, Job and junior Ines Mesquita as well as freshman Ioana Gheorghita and Linares extended their record to 6-1, 3-0, respectively, after picking up doubles victories against the Shockers.
The Sooners come in at No. 30 in ITA Rankings after winning against Gonzaga, 4-1. Oklahoma is 10-3 overall, and led by three-time Big 12 Player of the Week, No. 40 Oleksandra Korashvil, who stands with a 9-3 record.
In doubles, No. 75 Camila Romero and Martina Cappuro lead the team with an 18-5 record. The Sooners are currently are on a five-match winning streak.
The Wildcats and Sooners are set to start at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center. All-time, K-State is 13-31 against Oklahoma and 4-17 on the road.
On Sunday, the Wildcats and No. 11 OSU will begin on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Greenwood Tennis Center. Oklahoma State is coming off a win against Wichita State, 4-0. After winning five straight as a team, they come into Big 12 play with a 7-5 record.
No. 26 Katarina Stresnakova, No. 117 Lisa Marie Rioux, and No. 125 Sofia Blanco lead the Cowgirls in singles. In doubles, Blanco and Catherine Gulihur sit at No. 21, while Blanco and Rioux come in at No. 39.
K-State is 6-41 against Oklahoma State all-time with a road record of 2-18.
