
K-State Announces Team Awards at Annual Banquet

MANHATTAN, Kansas – With its postseason destination to be decided on Monday evening, K-State women's basketball took a moment during the open week to celebrate the 2018-19 season during the team's annual banquet on Sunday afternoon at the West Stadium Center.
Team awards handed out on Sunday were: Team MVP, the Kendra Wecker Offensive MVP, the Nicole Ohlde Defensive MVP, the Priscilla Gary Hustle Award, the First Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade Tammie Romstad Durable Award, the Dr. Pat Bosco Academic Award, Most Improved Player Award and the Student-Athlete Development Award.
The Kendra Wecker Offensive MVP is named after the three-time All-American and the program's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Wecker was a three-time All-Big 12 First Team recipient and the 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year. The 2019 honor was presented to senior guard and All-Big 12 First Team selection, Kayla Goth.
During the 2018-19 season, Goth leads the Big 12 in assists (220) and assists per game (6.9). She ranks among the top-10 in the nation in both categories. For the season, Goth is responsible for 48.4 percent of K-State's made field goals this season. She leads the Big 12 and is the top guard among Power 5 schools for percentage of a team's field goals responsible for. She ranks fourth in career assists in program history with 500 or more assists.
In addition to pacing the team in assists, Goth is second on the team in scoring with 12.6 points per game (402 points). The preseason candidate for the 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award is the first player in program history to register consecutive seasons with 400 or more points and 200 or more assists.
The All-America candidate from DeForest, Wisconsin, leads all guards in the Big 12 for double-doubles with a career-high six this season. Earlier this season, Goth became the 41st player in program history to reach 1,000 or more points in a career. She is the fourth player in program history with 1,000 or more points, 500 or more assists and 300 or more rebounds.
The Nicole Ohlde Defensive MVP is named for the former two-time consensus All-American. Ohlde concluded her career ranked first in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots and was a two-time Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and four-time All-Big 12 selection. Junior forward Peyton Williams collected her first career team defensive honor.
Williams was the second player in program history to garner Big 12 All-Defensive Team honors, joining former teammate and three-time Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection Breanna Lewis. Williams has recorded 36 blocks and a career-high 56 steals this season. She ranks among the top-15 in the Big 12 in blocks per game (1.2) and steals per game (1.8).
The All-America candidate from Topeka, Kansas, also leads K-State in rebounding with a career-high 299 (969 rpg). Williams leads all players in the Big 12 for rebound percentage at 26.7 percent. Her rebounding total this season ranks fourth in program history for a single season and are the most since Ohlde pulled in a junior season record 306 rebounds in the 2002-03 season.
Williams finished Big 12-play by averaging a double-double with 16.2 points and 10.0 rebounds. She is the first Wildcats to average a double-double in league play since Wecker in the 2004-05 season.
She has carded a career-high and Big 12 best 14 double-doubles this season. Her 14 double-doubles rank tied for third in school history for double-doubles in a single season.
Williams, a preseason candidate for the 2019 Katrina McClain Award, has increased her scoring average from last season to this season by 1.2 points per game and leads the Wildcats with 15.8 points per game (493 points), field goal percentage (.492) and free throw percentage (.851).
The Dr. Pat Bosco Academic Award, which is named after Dr. Pat Bosco, K-State's longtime Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students. Williams earned her first career Dr. Pat Bosco Academic Award this season.
Williams was one of three players to earned 2019 Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors this season with a 4.0 grade point average. The anthropology/international studies major with a minor in political science garnered 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District VII First Team honors selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Priscilla Gary Hustle Award is named after K-State's first Kodak All-American. Gary played for K-State from 1981-83 and helped the Wildcats to a pair of Big Eight titles and an appearance in the 1983 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. Earning the team's hustle award this season was redshirt junior Jasauen Beard.
Beard served as K-State's sixth woman this season, as she came off the bench in 25 of K-State's 32 games this season. The forward from Midwest City, Oklahoma, has registered career season-highs in every statistical category including points (8.0 ppg), rebounds (3.4 rpg) and steals (1.1 spg). She also recorded nine games in double figures including a career-high of 17 against DePaul and aid K-State's second half rally at TCU with 15 points, three steals and three assists.
The 2019 recipient of the First Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade Tammie Romstad Durable Award was sophomore guard Rachel Ranke. This honor is named after the two-time Wade Trophy finalist and the Wildcats' partner unit from Fort Riley.
Ranke has played in and started all 32 games this season. The native of Burnsville, Minnesota, has averaged 9.9 points per game and leads the team with 68 three-point field goals made. She has also set career season-highs in assists (41), steals (38) and blocked shots (10).
The team's 2019 Most Improved Player Award went to senior forward Kali Jones. Jones has also set career season-highs in every statistical category this season. She has ranked among the top-15 in blocks per game (1.3) and offensive rebounds per game (2.5). Against Lamar, Jones approached a rare triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and set the school record for blocks in a game with nine.
The program's second Student-Athlete Development Award was given to sophomore Ashley Ray. The forward from Girard, Kansas, has seen action in all 32 games with four starts in a career-best 246 minutes played (7.7 mpg). Ray has carded a career-high 18-of-42 effort from the field for 41 points and pulled in a career-high 37 rebounds.
Kansas State (21-11) is postseason eligible for the fifth straight season. K-State exceeded its 2018-19 Big 12 preseason coaches poll selection of eighth place by finishing in a tie for fourth with an 11-7 league mark. The Wildcats will find out its postseason destination on Monday, March 18, as the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship bracket will be announced on ESPN at 6 p.m.
