Cats Fall 6-1 to No. 18 Texas in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas?– The 36th ranked K-State Wildcats continued their four-match road trip Friday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center, dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 18 Texas.
Freshman Ioana Gheorghita picked up the lone singles win for K-State (10-6, 0-3 Big 12) at the No. 6 spot. Gheorghita overcame a first-set loss to upend Tijana Spasojevic, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Longhorns (8-3, 1-0 Big 12) featured a lineup with four nationally ranked players, as four of the six singles matches went the full three sets. Texas marked the Wildcats' fourth straight ranked opponent.
The sophomore duo of Margot Decker and Anna Turco picked up a 6-3 victory against Spasojevic and Petra Granic at the No. 1 doubles position. The Wildcats were unable to pick up the doubles point after losses on Courts 2 and 3.
Junior Ines Mesquita and freshman Karine-Marion Job lost to twin sisters Bianca and Anna Turati, 6-4. Gheorghita and sophomore Maria Linares lost from the No. 3 spot to Bojana Markovic and Fernanda Labrana, 6-4.
At the No. 1 spot in singles, Linares lost to No. 75 Bianca Turati, 6-3, 6-4, while Decker lost to No. 42 Anna Turati, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Job fell to No. 52 Granic, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 3 position and Turco spilt the first two sets with No. 105 Markovic, 6-1, 3-6, but ultimately lost to the Longhorn with a mark of 7-5.
From the No. 5 spot, Labrana defeated Mesquita after three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
K-State is now 0-29 all-time against the Longhorns and 0-11 in Austin. Texas has now won two straight matches overall.
The Wildcats stay on the road as they face the Baylor Bears on Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, beginning at 1 p.m.
