Cats End Road Trip with 4-3 Loss at Baylor
Mar 24, 2019 | Tennis
WACO, Texas?– The 36th ranked K-State Wildcats ended their four-match road trip on Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to the Baylor Bears at Hurd Tennis Center.
"Overall we competed hard in both matches," head coach Jordan Smith said. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to put enough pieces together to win either of the matches this weekend, even though we came out much better in doubles as a whole this weekend. We were finally able to be aggressive and take control of our match-ups. We just fell short at giving that final push late in multiple third sets on Friday and Saturday.
"Something that I'll be planning to improve on is to help put the team in better situations in the future. We have to keep moving forward and be ready for another challenging weekend against TCU and Texas Tech."
K-State (10-7, 0-4 Big 12) extended its season-long losing skid to four matches and now has an all-time record against Baylor of 5-25 and 1-16 in Waco. The Bears (6-15, 1-2 Big 12) pick up their first conference win.
The Wildcats began the day with a lead after picking up the doubles point, as the duo of freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita defeated Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa and Paula Baranano, 6-4, from the No. 2 spot.
At the No. 3, freshman Ioana Gheorghita and sophomore Maria Linares won against Angie Shakhraichuk and Dominika Sujova, 6-1, to seal the point.
The duo of sophomores Margot Decker and Anna Turco went unfinished against Livia Kraus and Kris Sorokolet with the score tied 6-6.
Turco picked up the Cats' first singles win at the No. 3 spot after she defeated Sorokolet, 6-3, 6-0. From the No. 6 position, Gheorghita upended Stephanie Adames, 6-2, 6-2, giving K-State a 3-0 lead.
Baylor then came back and won the remaining four singles matches to complete the comeback victory.
At the No. 2 spot, Decker fell to No. 59 Kraus, 6-4, 6-3, and Mesquita lost to Baranano, 7-6 (1), 6-4 from the No. 4.
The day ended as freshman Maria Ponomareva spilt the first two sets against Sujova, 5-7, 6-3, and ultimately lost in the third, 6-3. Linares also went to three sets against Hinojosa from the No. 1 spot, but fell, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
The Wildcats will now prepare for their Big 12 home opener against the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
