K-State’s Season Comes to an End in NCAA Tournament

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Kansas State made its 16th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center, but the eight-seed Michigan Wolverines ended K-State's season with an 84-54 win.
K-State (21-12) tied the school record for an NCAA Tournament game for steals, as the Wildcats pocketed 15. The record was originally set on March 25, 1983, against Texas.
Junior forward Peyton Williams snagged six steals to tie her career-high and tie the K-State single-game NCAA Tournament record for a player, which was set by Shalee Lehning on March 23, 2008, against Chattanooga.
Freshman Christianna Carr tallied a game-high 21 points and was 8-of-20 from the floor, including a 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. This was Carr's fourth game this season with 20 or more points.
Joining Carr in double figures was sophomore guard Rachel Ranke with 11 points. Ranke was 4-of-10 from the floor including a 3-of-7 effort from 3-point range.
Kansas State took an early 8-4 lead following a layup from Jasauen Beard with 4:29 remaining in the opening quarter. Michigan then used a 12-0 run to build a 16-8 lead with 57 seconds to play. The Wildcats broke the Michigan press and Ranke ended K-State's drought with a 3-pointer with 51 seconds to play to bring the Wildcats to within five, 16-11.
Michigan (22-11) would build an eight-point lead, 22-14, following a Hallie Thome layup with 7:56 to play in the second quarter. The tandem of Ranke and Carr would bring K-State back to within three, 26-23, as the duo each hit two three-pointers to start the second quarter.
After Ranke buried her second 3-pointer of the second quarter, the Wolverines would regroup after a timeout and use a 17-0 run to build a 43-23 lead with a minute remaining. In the final minute, Kayla Goth made a layup and Carr buried her third 3-pointer of the afternoon to bring K-State to within 15, 43-28, at the half.
Carr scored K-State's first four points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 13 twice, but the Wolverines would answer with an 14-3 run to increase its lead to 25, 61-36, with 2:21 remaining in the third frame. K-State would end the quarter down 23, 63-40.
Carr would score eight of K-State's 14 points in the fourth quarter, as Michigan would shoot over 50.0 percent from the field for a third straight quarter to seal the win.
Michigan finished the afternoon shooting 55.6 percent (35-of-63) from the floor and outscored K-State in the paint, 52-26. Kansas State shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the field, including a 7-of-22 effort from 3-point range.
Goth finished with eight points, six assists and three steals. Her six assists improved her season total to 226 and ties her career-high from last season of 226. Her 226 assists rank second in program history for a single season. She is the only player in program history with consecutive seasons with 225 or more assists.
K-State capped its 51st season in program history with 21 overall wins which is the 26th 20-win season in school history.
