Wildcats Round Out Top Five after Day One
Mar 23, 2019 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Kansas State men's golf team finds itself tied for fifth place following the first two rounds of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
The Wildcats, who are coming off their first team title in six years, shot 10-over par 586 to be tied with Notre Dame. K-State carded an even-par 288 following round one to place third, but the Wildcats slipped in round two after a 10-over par 298. K-State is three strokes behind Michigan State and 10 strokes ahead of Georgia Southern and Mississippi State.
"It was a grind today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The conditions were really difficult this morning, and we played really well for about 16 holes. I think we dropped 14 shots on the last couple of holes of round one and the first three holes of round two when the wind was blowing the hardest. It calmed down for the last several holes, but we just weren't able to take advantage. I thought we had a little bit of mental fatigue in round two, especially when you are out there for over 11 hours. We are still in a good position going into tomorrow. We just need to get some rest and come out and play a solid final round."
Senior Roland Massimino and juniors Jacob Eklund and Ben Fernandez all led the Cats, each in a tie for 18that 2-over par 146. Senior Jeremy Gandon tallied a 5-over par 149 and is in a tie for 32nd, while senior JC Campbell's 6-over par 150 makes him tied for 39th.
No. 24 Illinois leads the pack after day one. The Illini shot 2-under par 574, leaving them one stroke ahead of No. 30 North Carolina and eight strokes ahead of 13th-ranked North Florida.
