Horned Frogs Edge Cats in Big 12 Home Opener

MANHATTAN, Kan.?– Friday's match was highlighted by singles wins from sophomore Anna Turco and freshman Ioana Gheorghita, but No. 48 K-State women's tennis fell to the TCU Horned Frogs at Body First Indoor Tennis Center, 4-2.
Turco was the first singles match to finish, as she defeated TCU's Mercedes Aristegui with ease, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 3 position. Turco is now 10-6 on the season and 2-3 in the Big 12.
Gheorghita extended her winning streak to three matches after she defeated Addy Guevara, 6-1, 6-2. Gheorghita improves to 4-3 in the spring with a 3-1 Big 12 mark.
TCU (12-5, 4-1 Big 12) clinched the doubles point with victories on Courts 1 and 2. Sophomores Turco and Margot Decker lost to No. 27 Ellie Douglas and Aleksa Cveticanin from the No. 1 spot, 6-0. At the No. 2 position, freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita lost to Chole Hule and Stevie Kennedy, 6-1.
Sophomore Maria Linares and Gheorghita also competed, but went unfinished against Aristegui and Kate Paulus, 4-1.
In singles play, Decker fell to Cveticanin from the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-2. At the No. 1 position, Linares lost to No. 112 Douglas, 6-4, 6-1. To close out the day, Job spilt the first two sets against Paula, 4-6, 6-1, before dropping the third set 6-0.
Mesquita led Hule by a score of 6-3, 5-4 when the match was decided.
The Cats are now 1-9 all-time against TCU and 0-3 at home. K-State has now lost a season-high five consecutive matches.
K-State (10-8, 0-5 Big 12) will host No. 25 Texas Tech on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium, if weather allows. If weather does not permit, the Wildcats will return to Body First Indoor Tennis Center.
