Wicks, Ceballos Help K-State Even Series
Mar 09, 2019 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State freshman Jordan Wicks tossed seven scoreless innings while junior Chris Ceballos hit a three-run home run in a 6-2 win over Old Dominion to even its three-game series Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
Wicks, a left-hander from Conway, Arkansas, yielded just two hits over his seven innings of work, tallying four strikeouts in earning his second win of the season. Wicks carried a one-hitter into the seventh inning and retired a string of 10 consecutive Old Dominion batters, as he set down 14 of 15 hitters overall at one point.
"Veteran competitor, he had really good stuff today," head coach Pete Hughes said of Wicks. "He pitched his fastball to both sides of the plate today and threw a lot of strikes. Jordan Wicks was awesome today."
"We really knew we could command it to both sides of the plate," said Wicks. "We stuck with it and threw some wrinkles in there – some cutters and some changeups – but really just let my defense work behind me. They did an outstanding job all day today."
In matching his longest outing of the season, Wicks' second quality outing of the year, along with Ceballos' game-high three runs batted in, helped K-State (6-7) snap Old Dominion's (10-3) nine-game winning streak. Sophomore Terrence Spurlin had two hits, including a solo home run in the eighth, and drove in a pair.
"Situationally, we hit well," added Hughes. "We got a couple big hits early. The ball was in play and we could get productive outs, that helped us be a good offense. On a tough day to play, I thought our guys braved the elements and it didn't really affect our performance. When you can play defense with a wind like that and not have any errors, you feel pretty good."
K-State manufactured a run in the third, after Cameron Thompson and Will Brennan began the inning with back-to-back singles. Following a sacrifice bunt by Caleb Littlejim, Spurlin's sacrifice fly scored Thompson and extended the Wildcats' lead to four runs after three.
In the sixth, Jordan Maxson roped a two-out double off the wall in left-center field that scored Littlejim. Maxson was 2-for-4 in the game.
After Wicks exited the ballgame, ODU leadoff hitter Kyle Battle delivered a two-out, two-run double in the eighth to account for the two Monarch runs. In the inning, Greg Lamb was hit by a pitch and Bryce Windham singled.
Wildcat senior Mitch Zubradt threw a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the win. Zubradt has recorded the final out in five of the Cats' six victories this season and has yet to allow a run.
Four K-State relievers combined to allow just two walks while picking up five strikeouts. Conversely, Wildcat hitters struck out just three times in the game.
ODU starting pitcher Morgan Maguire allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits over 5 2/3 innings, taking the loss.
"We try and teach these guys to create a home-field advantage," Hughes said. "It gets us back into a series and a chance to win the series tomorrow."
K-State goes for a series win against Old Dominion in the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will stream live on K-StateHD.TV along with the K-State Sports Roku app and Apple TV. Coverage is also available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with streaming audio on K-StateSports.com/watch.
