Wildcats Continue Spring Racing Season at SIRA’s
Apr 17, 2019 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will compete in their third regatta of the spring season this weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships on Melton Hill Lake on April 19-20.
The Wildcats are no strangers to the course, competing on Melton Hill lake dating back to the 1997-1998 season. The course will also play host to the Big 12 Championship on May 19.
"The aim would be that all the boats make it to the finals but also medal," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. "We're really in a good spot, we haven't backed off. We're pushing through with our mind on the Sunflower Showdown and Big 12's down the line."
A year ago, K-State brought home four medals at the SIRA Championships, pushing all five boats to their respective finals, including a gold medal performance from the K-State 2v8+.
The Wildcats look to continue their success from the first two regattas of the spring season, after four boats medaled at the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, Florida on April 5-6. At the Hornet Invitational on March 16-17, K-State began their season by winning nine total races, including seven consecutive victories against Saint Mary's and Sacramento State.
"Because we know they can go down the course at a good pace, it's trying to perfect it and make it better. That's really what we're looking at now," Sweeney said. "We can really use these races to focus on the technical side of things, more than anything else,"
K-State will begin the SIRA Championships on Friday, with all five boats competing in the time trials. On Saturday, each boat will race in the semifinals in the morning for a shot at the finals in the afternoon.
