Cats Sweep West Virginia, Advance to Quarterfinals

Apr 18, 2019 | Tennis

LAWRENCE, Kan.?– The K-State women's tennis team swept the West Virgina Mountaineers, 4-0, at the Jayhawk Tennis Center on Thursday in the first round of the Big 12 Championship to advance to the quarterfinals round on Friday.

"I thought it went well for the most part," said head coach Jordan Smith. "Those were probably some of the toughest conditions we've had to play in with the wind and the gusts going and it not being that warm, but we had to prepare for that, be ready for any environment. We came in pretty well in doubles and took it to them.

"We managed to come out in singles, and which gave us a chance. We continued to bring the momentum. We knew they were going to play better in singles than they did in doubles, but we were ready for the challenge, which is something we need to keep doing. We've been in the fight for a while now and hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow against Oklahoma State."

The Wildcats (13-10, 2-7 Big 12) arrived at the tournament as the No. 7 seed and swept the 10th-seeded Mountaineers (10-12, 0-9 Big 12) for the second time this season. K-State is now 11-0 all-time vs. WVU.

K-State clinched the doubles point for the fourth time in its last five matches after wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita defeated Sofia Duran and Anastasia Bovolskaia, 6-0, before the sophomore tandem of Anna Turco and Margot Decker ousted Paula Goetz and Christina Jordan, 6-2.

Freshman Ioana Gheorghita and sophomore Maria Linares competed against Abigail Rosiello and Anne-Sophie Courteau but went unfinished at the 4-3 mark.

At the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup, Turco won against Jordan, 6-3, 6-1. It was Turco's first career match playing at the top spot in the order, as the Italian has won six of her last singles outings.

Job won in straight sets against Bovolskaia, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 4 position and Mesquita won on Court 5 over Courteau, 6-3, 6-0, to seal the 4-0 victory for the Cats.

At the No. 2 matchup, Linares went against Goetz and went unfinished in the second set, 6-1, 4-3. Decker was paired up against Duran and went unfinished at the 4-6, 3-2 mark. Gheorghita and Giovanna Caputo split sets at the sixth position, 6-1, 2-6.

On Friday, K-State will face the No. 2 seed Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Cats and Cowboys met in Stillwater during regular season, and Oklahoma State walked away with a 6-1 win. K-State is 6-42 all-time against the Cowgirls.
