McKenzie Sets NCAA Lead, Wildcats Impress at Michael Johnson Invitational
Apr 20, 2019 | Track & Field
WACO, Texas – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams put together several standout performances at the Michael Johnson Invitational at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium in Waco, Texas on Saturday, as the Wildcats won nine events, including a new NCAA lead in the women's 400-meter hurdles set by senior Ranae McKenzie.
"We did have some very fine performances and a number of solid expected marks," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "But we also had some disappointing performances. It's those that we have to get figured out, and quickly. But overall as a team it was a very good weekend."
McKenzie, a native of Manchester, Jamaica, had a career-performance on the same track a season ago, where she won the Big 12 400-meter hurdles title in 56.06, which stands as her personal best. On Saturday, she approached that mark by running the second-fastest time of her career.
Running against Ashley Spencer, Olympic bronze medalist at the 2016 Olympic Games, McKenzie latched on and ran the fastest time in the NCAA of 56.11, finishing as the top collegian and just off Spencer, who finished in 55.84. In addition, junior Lauren Taubert came in as the second-fastest collegian in 58.72, while freshman Lavaun Stephenson set a personal best of 1:00.90.
A week after setting the school record in the men's shot put, earning Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors, senior Brett Neelly provided another standout performance on Saturday, surpassing the 20-meter plateau for the second time in his outdoor career. Neelly unloaded a throw of 20.06m/65-09.75 on his fifth attempt, which was enough to win the event.
After setting the No. 6 mark in the NCAA in the 800 meters at the Sun Angel Classic, redshirt freshman Kassidy Johnson ran away with the women's 1,500 meter invitational on Saturday, leading wire-to-wire to finish first in 4:23.78. Her 4:23.78 is nearly a 10 second improvement from her previous best of 4:33.20 set at the TCU Invitational earlier this season.
In the men's 1,500 meter invitational, redshirt freshman Dylan Brenneman also ran the fastest time in the event, coming in at 3:55.48 to win by nearly three seconds. Brenneman's time of 3:55.48 marks a career-best, breaking his previous best of 3:56.20 set at the K.T. Woodman Classic on April 12.
In the men's 400 meters open, junior Justin Davis also ran the fastest time of his career, running a 46.86 to win the event and mark the fastest time by a Wildcat in the event this season. Davis entered with a personal best of 47.53 set at the Sun Angel Classic on April 6.
Next, K-State will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to compete in the second-annual National Relay Championships on April 26-27. From there, K-State will return home to host the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 3-4, before taking off for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships on May 10-12 in Norman, Oklahoma.
