
K-State Takes Fourth Place Behind Massimino’s Top 10 Finish

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Kansas State men's golf team and senior Roland Massimino both backed Saturday's consistent rounds with a solid final round in the Hawkeye Invitational on Sunday at the par-71, 6,884 yard Finkbine Golf Course.
K-State shot 2-under par 282 in the final round, the same score it shot in round two. The Wildcats finished the tournament 10-under par 842 to finish in fourth place, three strokes behind Kansas and three strokes ahead of UMKC and Minnesota.
Massimino led K-State for the second consecutive day, concluding the final round with a 2-under par 69 and finishing tournament tied for seventh at 8-under par 205.
"It was a solid finish for us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We had our chances, but we just weren't able to get four guys firing at the same time this week. I know one thing – these guys like to compete. We are looking forward to the Big 12 Championship next weekend."
Freshman Will Hopkins, who competed as an individual, had his best tournament of the season as he carded a 4-under par 209 and tied for 14th. For Hopkins, it was the best finish in his young career. Senior Jeremy Gandon finished at 2-under par 211, tying him for 20th. Junior Ben Fernandez made one of the biggest jumps on Sunday, climbing 18 spots to a tie for 25th at even-par 213. Junior Jacob Eklund tallied at 4-over par 217 to tie for 39th, while senior JC Campbell finished one stroke behind Eklund at 5-over par 218 and tied for 43rd.
After leading all day on Saturday, tournament host and 43rd-nationally ranked Iowa won the event at 43-under par 809. Fellow Big Ten school Illinois, which is ranked 30th, finished six strokes behind the Hawkeyes. Iowa's Matthew Wealker and Alex Schakke came from behind to tie for first at 14-under par 199. The Hawkeye duo was two strokes ahead of Kansas' Charlie Hillier, who finished in third.
K-State heads to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, April 26-28, to compete in the 2019 Big 12 Championship.
