Sooners Claim Series Opener Friday Night

Apr 26, 2019 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State sophomore Zach Kokoska hit a two-run home run, but Oklahoma scored eight runs over two innings to claim the series opener Friday night, 8-4, at Tointon Family Stadium.

Oklahoma (29-14, 7-6 Big 12) built a seven-run lead behind a four-run third to go with a four in the seventh as the game reached the seventh-inning stretch. K-State (20-23, 5-8 Big 12) scored three unanswered runs over the final two innings, including Kokoska's team-leading seventh homer.

"Our guys showed some resilience tonight," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "It was just too big of a deficit late … The crowd was great tonight. Hopefully tomorrow we will give them something be loud about."

Kokoska extended his season-long hitting streak to 12 games, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Wildcats have homered in 10 straight games.

Thomas Hughes and Cameron Thompson both produced multi-hit games. Will Brennan and Chris Ceballos tallied a run batted in each.

Back-to-back doubles by Brady Harlan and Tanner Tredaway sparked Oklahoma's four-run third inning. Brady Lindsly also doubled in the inning while Justin Mitchell added an RBI single, as the Sooners tallied four base hits off Wildcat starter Griffin Hassall in the frame.

Hassall left the game after three innings with four runs allowed (three earned) on four hits. The freshman righty-handed issued a career-high four walks as his record evened to 2-2.

Freshman Eric Torres tossed the next three innings in relief of Hassall. Torres yielded four runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Torres exited the game in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs. Mitch Zubradt, who entered for Torres, allowed a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. In total, the Sooners tallied five singles in their second four-run frame.

Oklahoma brought nine hitters to the plate in both the third and seventh innings.

K-State stranded four runners in the game's first two innings, plating the game's first run in the bottom of the first via an RBI groundout by Ceballos with the bases loaded.

Kokoska's home run followed Hughes' leadoff single in the eighth. Brennan added an RBI groundout in the ninth that scored Thompson, who earlier doubled.

OU starter Nathan Wiles scattered seven hits in allowing three earned runs over his 7 1/3 innings of work. Wiles earned his seventh win of the season, striking out six.

Mitchell went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI for Oklahoma. Conor McKenna finished 2-for-3 while Tredaway was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Sooners hit .462 with runners in scoring position and .316 with runners on base. K-State went hitless (0-for-7) with runners in scoring position.

Game 2 of the series is set for Saturday at 4 p.m., and will stream on ESPN3 and the ESPN app. Radio coverage is available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live streaming audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
