Mutiri’s 18 Kills Not Enough as Cats Drop Five-Setter at MSU

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – K-State got a career-high 18 kills from Gloria Mutiri, but Missouri State rallied to take the final two sets Thursday night to snatch a five-set victory over the Wildcats (25-18, 23-25, 25-13, 17-25, 14-16) on the opening day of the MSU Fall Invitational at Hammons Student Center.

Mutiri's career-best output came at a .429 clip, as the sophomore opposite committed just three errors on 35 swings. Freshman outside hitter Anna Dixon and redshirt junior middle blocker Peyton Williams each turned in 13 kills to cap a trio of Wildcats in double figures. Williams produced a match-high .435 attacking percentage.

K-State (4-3) hit north of .400 in Sets 1 and 3 but hit .250 or less in the three sets it dropped to Missouri State (3-5).

The Bears forced a fifth set after closing the fourth set on an 8-2 run. K-State raced out to a 6-2 lead in the final frame and held a three-point advantage when the teams changed benches, 8-5. MSU rattled off six of seven points to take its first lead, 11-10, only to see the Cats rebound and level the score at 14.

Missouri State hit .250 in the final game while limiting K-State a .115 hitting efficiency behind three team blocks. MSU tallied three team blocks in the fourth and fifth sets while the Cats did not record a block in the final two games.

The Cats owned a 59-55 edge in total kills while maintaining a .265-.239 advantage in hitting percentage.

Freshman libero Dru Kuck registered a match-high 23 digs, her third straight match with 20 or more digs. Redshirt sophomore Jacque Smith chipped in 10.

Missouri State's Chloe Rear turned in a triple-double with 18 kills, 15 assists and 10 digs. Rear also led the Bears with a .417 hitting percentage.

A five-point burst that included two service aces by Williams pushed the Wildcat lead to seven points at 18-11. K-State, who never trailed in the opening set, hit .438 as a team while racking up 17 total kills. Mutiri posted a team-high five kills in the frame while Carlson and Vernon each added four.

Missouri State countered by scoring eight of the first 10 points in Set 2, forcing an early K-State timeout. The Bears later held a 21-13 lead before K-State rattled off the next five points as part of a 10-4 run, fighting off four set points before falling 25-23. The Wildcat offense managed just eight kills at a .065 clip.

K-State responded in the third set by hitting .433, as the Cats never trailed in taking a 2-1 match lead. Mutiri picked up four kills in the set while the defense collected four team blocks, led by Abigail Archibong with two block assists. Kuck tallied seven digs as K-State limited MSU to a .038 hitting efficiency.

Three lead changes and three tie scores highlighted the fourth set. MSU shut the door and forced a decisive frame by scoring eight of the final 10 points, capped by a service ace by Kennedee Anderson.  Rear picked up four kills on seven swings without an error in the set. Williams totaled five kills on nine swings to lead K-State,

Each side recorded seven service aces. Williams led the Cats with three, matching her career high, while Rear collected four to pace MSU.

Missouri State double up K-State in total blocks, 12-6, as the Cats were led by Archibong with four total blocks. Mutiri added three blocks.
