Bobcats Fend Off K-State in Five Sets Friday

DENTON, Texas – For the second straight night, K-State recovered from a 2-1 hole to force a fifth set, but the Wildcats suffered a defeat to Ohio Friday, 26-28, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22, 12-15, at North Texas Volleyball Center.

K-State (5-6) held an 8-5 lead as the teams changed benches in the final set. Ohio's Vera Giacomazzi and Tia Jimerson teamed up to block three consecutive Wildcat attacks to get the Bobcats (8-4) within a point before they closed the match by scoring five of the final six points. Ohio ended the night on a 10-2 run.

In the fifth, the Bobcats limited K-State to a .118 efficiency – the Cats' lowest of the match – behind four total team blocks.

Ohio out-killed the Cats 79-67 as five Bobcats reached double-figure kills. Lizzie Stephens turned in a match-high 20 kills while Giacomazzi produced 74 assists.

Sarah Dixon dished out a career-high 61 assists as four Cats eclipsed the 10-kill mark, led by Gloria Mutiri's 17. Dixon's output was the first 60-assist match by Wildcat since Katie Brand's 60 in 2016.

Brynn Carlson added 14 kills while Peyton Williams chipped in 13 while hitting a team-high .500 (1 error, 24 attacks). Freshman Anna Dixon added 11 kills.

K-State got four kills apiece from Dixon and Mutiri in a fourth set that saw a dozen tie scores. The Cats hit .379 in forcing a fifth set.

Ohio fought off four set points in the opening frame before a three-point burst handed the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. K-State led 24-22, but Ohio rallied to score six of the next eight, capped by a kill by Stephens. Williams paced the Cats with five kills on nine swings without an error while Megan Vernon tallied three blocks in the set. Ohio registered 21 kills at a .364 clip while the Wildcats produced 13 kills with a .220 hitting percentage.

K-State led throughout Set 2 and led by as many as seven points, evening the match with a 25-20 victory in which the Cats limited Ohio to a .171 efficiency. Vernon picked up five of K-State's 17 kills in the set. Ohio used an 8-1 run midway through the frame, including a string of five straight points.

The Bobcats needed extra points again in the third as K-State fended off a pair of set points. Each side registered 18 kills while Ohio hit .400 to K-State's .300. Carlson added six kills in the set while Mutiri picked up five.

Dru Kuck and Jacque Smith tied for the team lead with 15 digs each. Vernon contributed five total blocks (1 solo, 4 assists) as the Wildcats totaled nine team blocks on the night.
Vernon finished with a career-high eight kills and hit .438 (1 error, 16 swings).
