Carlson Turns in 21-Kill Effort in Four-Set Loss to Lobos

Sep 21, 2019 | Volleyball

DENTON, Texas – K-State's Brynn Carlson registered a career-high 21 kills Saturday in a four-set loss to New Mexico in the Wildcats' final non-conference match of the season, 28-30, 25-17, 17-25, 23-25, at North Texas Volleyball Center.

Carlson needed just 39 swings to accumulate her career-best total, hitting at a .436 clip (4 errors). The redshirt sophomore outside hitter is the first Wildcat to eclipse 20 kills this season.

"I thought she was tremendous," head coach Suzie Fritz said of Carlson. "Coming off of yesterday and the combination of not just the offensive performance but defensively, she was really good, and upgraded from where she was at yesterday. I thought she was tremendous."

K-State (5-7) owned a 58-50 edge in total kills over New Mexico (5-7), as Anna Dixon (12) and Gloria Mutiri (10) joined Carlson in double figures. Setter Sarah Dixon turned in her seventh double-double of the season with 46 assists and 12 digs.

The Lobos served up 10 aces, with seven coming in the opening set. The match saw 27 tie scores along with 10 lead changes over the four sets.

"We've been talking and working a lot on our transition game," added Fritz. "Connecting the dots from our ability to serve productively and get some touches at the net and to convert those into points. For all practical purposes, we won the transition game. Where it got away from us was serve and pass and a little bit of first-swing offense. We're just trying to get a little bit better in all phases looking ahead to next week."

The opening set featured seven lead changes along with 11 tie scores before the Lobos came away with a 30-28 set victory. New Mexico tallied seven aces in the frame, including the final point, as each side had three set-point opportunities. Carlson led all players with eight kills while hitting .636 in the set. The set saw a 7-1 New Mexico burst midway through the set and K-State later responded with a 5-1 run.

K-State leveled the match after ending the second set on an 11-3 run. Carlson added six more kills in the set as the Cats hit .371 in the set and picked up 16 kills while holding New Mexico to 11 kills at a .154 clip.

A 9-1 Lobo run proved to be the difference in the third set, as K-State never led in the frame. UNM's spurt came with the score tied 7-7 and the Wildcats could only get as close as six points from there. The Cats were limited to a .067 hitting efficiency behind three team blocks by UNM.

The Cats raced out to a 10-5 lead in the fourth only to see New Mexico go on a 10-5 run of its own to tie the score at 15. Later, a 6-1 run helped UNM create separation and close the match. The Lobos recorded three more team blocks in the set, including the match's final point.

K-State thwarted 10 New Mexico attacks, reaching double-digit blocks for the second time this season. Peyton Williams led the Cats with six total blocks (1 solo, 5 assists) while fellow middle blocker Megan Vernon added four (1 solo, 3 assists).

Senior Mckenzi Weber led K-State with 14 digs, a career high, in addition to two service aces. Freshmen Loren Hinkle and Dru Kuck each added a dozen digs and Hinkle registered an ace for the eighth consecutive match.

Offensively, New Mexico was paced by Tai Bierria and Lauren Twitty, who each had 14 kills. Bierria added four aces and a match-high 17 digs.

The Wildcats begin Big 12 play Saturday at TCU. The matchup with the Horned Frogs is set for a 4 p.m. start as Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Fans can also listen free at K-StateSports.com/watch.
