Wildcat Defense Stifles Horned Frogs Saturday
Sep 28, 2019 | Volleyball
FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State got a season-high 18 team blocks to go with 18 kills by Brynn Carlson in a four-set victory over TCU in the Wildcats' Big 12 opener, 15-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-23, at The Rickel Saturday.
K-State (6-7, 1-0 Big 12) bounced back from an opening-set loss to register 15 team blocks in the second and third sets, holding TCU (5-7, 0-2 Big 12) to a .125 hitting percentage in the match. Carlson tallied 10 of her match-high 18 kills in the final set.
"I thought there was a significant upgrade in a couple of areas, particularly serving and passing starting in Game 2," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "We really struggled passing early on in the match, and we kind of settled in in that area. I thought there was a really nice upgrade from our serve-to-block sequence.
"Eighteen blocks in a four-game match is really, really good. That felt really good for us because we've spent a lot of time trying to sure up our defensive system this week. So to see some things come together like that was really positive."
The Frogs failed to hit over .170 in any of the final three sets after opening the match with a .375 mark in their lone set victory. K-State forced 29 of TCU's 33 attacking errors after Set 1.
Peyton Williams (9), Megan Vernon (8) and Sarah Dixon (7) all set career highs for blocks, as the 18 total blocks marked the third-highest total in program history for a four-set match (rally scoring).
Carlson committed just one attacking error on her way to hitting a team-best .362 (47 attacks). Freshman Anna Dixon added 13 kills.
Jacque Smith matched her career high with 19 digs to lead the Wildcats.
TCU never trailed in the opening set, as the Horned Frogs tallied 16 kills and hit at a .375 clip. Katie Clark accounted for seven kills on 10 attacks with just one error (.600). Anna Dixon and Brynn Carlson each chipped in two kills while the Cats were limited to just seven kills as a team in the frame. TCU used an early four-point burst before ending the set on a 9-3 scoring run.
Seven blocks by the Wildcats, including four by Williams, in the second set helped K-State even the match. The K-State defense limited TCU to a .045 team efficiency while the Cats' offense did not commit an attacking error while collecting 10 kills. In a set that saw eight tie scores, the Wildcats went on a 9-2 burst to claim the set.
K-State registered eight more blocks in Set 3 on its way to taking a 2-1 lead. Williams added three more stuff blocks while Vernon accounted for four in forcing the Frogs into more attacking errors (12) than kills (10). The Wildcats, who never trailed in the set, got four kills from Carlson and three from Dixon.
Carlson needed just 19 swings to pick up her 10 kills in the fourth set, hitting .474 and accounting for six kills during a 7-2 Wildcat run midway in the frame. K-State racked up 19 kills in the fourth while the defense held TCU to a .163 clip.
TCU's Katie Clark led the Frogs with a dozen kills while freshman Audrey Nalls added 11.
The Horned Frogs held a 52-48 advantage in total kills, but K-State hit at a .281 clip while TCU hit just .125 in the match.
As a team, K-State committed just 10 attacking errors, with two total errors coming in Sets 2 and 3.
