
Wildcats Complete Day Two of Marliss Gruver Invitational

AUBURN, Alabama. – The Kansas State women's tennis team began day two of the Marliss Gruver Invitational on Saturday with the start of doubles play and the latter part of singles competition at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Beginning with match-ups against Auburn and Wisconsin, K-State would pull off victories in the first leg of doubles competition as Karine-Marion Job and Ines Mesquita both handled their opponents with a 6-2 victory while Rosanna Maffei and Ioana Gheorghita staved off a comeback from Wisconsin with a 7-6 (4) win.
During the second round of doubles play, both pairings would drop their sets as Job and Mesquita fell to the 17th ranked pairing in the country, as Alexa Bortles and Sabina Machalova from Ole Miss won their set with a score of 7-5. Maffei and Gheorghita could not pull off two victories in a row in the Flight B bracket, as the pairing fell to Raissa Lou and Rhea Shrivastava from Yale with a score of 6-2.
As singles play began later in the day, Maffei would take down Auburn's Madeline Meredith in the Flight A semifinal round with a score of 6-3, 6-1, advancing to the title match on Sunday.
Job, Gheorghita and Mesquita could not overcome their opponents on the afternoon, as all three would fall in their respective singles match-ups.
Overall, K-State produced a 2-2 record for doubles competition, while notching one win in singles play on the afternoon.
The Wildcats will conclude play at the Marliss Gruver Invitational on Sunday with more singles and doubles action.
