K-State, Texas Tangle in Tight Match on Sunday
Sep 29, 2019 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State soccer took the Big 12 Conference's preseason third-place selection Texas to the brink on Sunday afternoon at Buser Family Park. The Longhorns tallied a late goal for the 1-0 win over the Wildcats.
"I felt like we did a good job of competing," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini about Sunday's performance. "We had some chances, they had some chances, they're a good team. I just feel like, right now, we're in a stage where we've got to continue to keep working hard, which they will. The harder we work, the luckier we're going to get and it'll bounce our way once we can continue to do that. It's coming, we're on the verge. We're on the brink, we've just had some unlucky breaks. They scored the one that mattered and that's coming for us."
With south winds gusting to 30 miles per hour in the first half, Texas (7-4-0, 2-0-0 Big 12) had the advantage with the wind at their back and tallied a 12-4 margin in total shots. K-State (2-7-2, 0-2-0) was able to notch two of their four shots on goal, as freshman Bailey Nemechek and senior Katie Cramer tallied one apiece.
Cramer's shot came in the 29th minute, as junior Brookelynn Entz played Cramer into the top of the 18-yard box behind the Texas defense. Cramer was one-on-one with Longhorns' goalkeeper Nicole Curry, but Curry deflected the shot out of bounds past the post for a K-State corner kick. Dibbini's credits K-State's increased offense against the wind to an adjustment to the formation.
"I thought that, after the first 10 minutes when we had to change our formation a little bit, then we started executing and playing through the lines and playing our style. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the one we needed to find some separation."
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Harris pocketed three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, K-State played with the breeze at its back and pocketed an 11-10 edge in total shots. Dibbini credited his front five for building the second half attack.
"We were fighting through tough battles. We were staying urgent and trying to create chances for ourselves. Just unfortunate that we just couldn't get that lucky bounce."
The Longhorns tallied the lone goal in the match in the 87th minute. Haley Berg played a ball into the 18-yard box. Julia Grosso, a member of the Canadian National Team for the 2019 Women's World Cup, ran onto the pass and finished for the deciding tally.
Texas held a 22-15 edge in total shots and a 9-5 lead in shots on goal. K-State held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
K-State freshman Shae Turner experienced the first two Big 12 matches of her career and is looking at taking this weekend's results and moving forward.
"Obviously it's a little frustrating how the season has gone a little bit. Last year, obviously I wasn't here but I just know that we had trouble even getting out of our own half but this year we are competing and getting shots off, it's honestly very even. We're competing in every aspect of the game and it's honestly just that last 30 seconds. That last extra tackle that needs to be made. Today was unfortunate but we have to move forward and know that we're competing regardless and it's looking up for sure."
Kansas State will play four of its next five matches on the road, as the Wildcats begin a two-match swing through Oklahoma on Thursday. K-State will face Oklahoma at 7 p.m., in Norman on Thursday and visit Stillwater on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., to face Oklahoma State.
Both matches are available on 101.5 KROCK in Manhattan and for free at kstatesports.com. Thursday's match at Oklahoma is available on Sooner Sports TV. Sunday's match will be broadcast on ESPN+.

On how his team has responded to playing top conference games this weekend…
"I felt like we did a good job of competing. We had some chances, they had some chances, they're a good team. On the first half…
"I thought that, after the first 10 minutes when we had to change our formation a little bit, then we started executing and playing through the lines and playing our style. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the one we needed to find some separation and they did and we've just got to rebound, get back to the drawing board and keep fighting, which we will. And hopefully we get through that next match."
On what was working with the front five…
"We were fighting through tough battles. We were staying urgent and trying to create chances for ourselves. Just unfortunate that we just couldn't get that lucky bounce."
LARAMIE HALL, SENIOR MIDFIELDER
On the first half of play…
"I think it was just knowing we needed to out out there with intensity and put pressure on them. We respect them but we're just as good so not laying off, not defending the whole half, we know that we can play them straight up and have a chance."
On having more shots in the second half with the wind to their backs…
"That was the idea knowing that we have the wind, that's just another aspect of the game that we can utilize when the weather is like this"
SHAE TURNER, FRESHMAN MIDFIELDER
On playing against the wind in the first half…
"We always want to play K-State soccer so we wanted to play possession. We kind of got away from that at the beginning, we started playing long balls with the wind and obviously that didn't really work out for us. After the water break we just kind of calmed down and regrouped, talked with each other and told each other to stay positive. After we had that talk together I feel like we really came together and started possessing, passing the ball in and around."
On playing with the wind in the second half…
"I think knowing how well the end of the first half went just kind of carried our momentum in to the second half. Obviously the wind does help if you're going to play long ball so we looked at it a couple of other times but overall we still wanted to play K-State soccer, that's our identity and that's what we want to go forward with always. We look to play forward but we also want to possess and piece it around them because we were able to and we did."
On takeaways from the start of Big 12 play…
